This has baffled me for ages and I've looked on the forums but I think I need the idiots version to the below question:

How do I record audio/midi live using acid. I have installed midi-ox, midi-yoke and I have a sound blaster live card. All I want to do is import an audio/midi track add an effect and record the effect being manipulated live back to acid. Can someone please explain how they do this?

Also is it possible to use my computer keboard to play the midi roll piano and record that live?

Thanks.

You only need something like MIDI Yoke when you need to "connect" one application to another. MIDI Ox is a diagnostic tool/SysEx librarian.

As long as the Live's drivers are installed properly, you need to go into Options > Preferences > Audio Device to ensure that the proper digital audio drivers and inputs are selected. Use Options > Preferences > MIDI to ensure that the right MIDI inputs are selected.

(I'm assuming you're using ACID Pro 6 here.)

Barring that, it's a matter of inserting a track, then arming it for recording. Then you just click the record button and record away.

Note that MIDI is just a set of instructions; in order to hear what's going on, the MIDI track must be routed to a soft synth (or external MIDI gear). ACID comes with the Sony DLS Soft Synth as an example but there are tons of other soft synths and VSTis out there.

If you have a MIDI track properly routed to a soft synth, you can use its graphical keyboard to record, but that is, of course, a bit too clunky. You're much better off using a MIDI keyboard/controller of some sort.

I'm using Acid music studio 6. Can I still record instruments live?

Sure. Refer to the full ACID Music Studio 6.0 manual, available here. (It's the 5th link down.) Check out chapter 9, p. 169.
