I'm surprised that a release of Acid is still so buggy after four updates. I have issues with MIDI not working right, plug-ins that used to work fine no longer loading, and the loop marker not working right when it gets adjusted, among other things.

Just my two cents, but it seems like each update to 6 has brought as many new bugs as it has fixed, if not more.

Care to be specific and provide some details of problems and how they occur?

Specific plugins names that are causing problems?

The more details, the beter

Thanks
Peter

My experience has been a little different. Acid pro has been stable for me, including every version of 6.0.

Acid pro 6.0d has also been stable for me, except for some plugins crashing when used as Track FX (Image line's FX plugins and energyXT f.inst.). Really annoying!

EVP73 pitch with 48khz soundcard:

Midi list edits not reflected in project playback

6.0d, XP, 2gb memory, 2.2ghz P4.

The EVP73 does not support anything other than 44.1. Nothing we can do about it.

MIDI List Edits:

Only note on/off events are dynamically reflected to the main time line from clip editors. The Main time line ONLY uses envelopes for CC msgs. If you change the CC msgs in the List or PR editor, then you must import the changes at the points in the time line by right clicking on the event on the main time line.

Yes, this is a limitation and we are working on a new approach for a future version of ACID.

"If you change the CC msgs in the List or PR editor, then you must import the changes at the points in the time line by right clicking on the event on the main time line."

I'm sorry, I don't understand. Any way you could give me a step-by-step?

Thx for the EVP info. I doubt Apple is supporting it. Funny that it renders at normal pitch.

I have no step by step to give you. I followed your example that you posted elsewhere.

As I followed you, you edited a CC msg in the List Editor.

You stated:

"A couple of details - (1) I was moving and thinning controller events, (2) I was using midi channel 2. "

Since you did not 'import" this CC edit back, then your main time line will not reflect the change.

The main time line will ONLY listen to CC msgs that are exposed as envelopes. If you edit a clips CC msgs, then you must import them back to the timeline manually.

In your original example, you state you use a external controller to record the information in to ACID. On the tracks you recorded these to, you will have envelopes generated. The clip also has the CC data recorded to it.

If you edit the clip CC data, you must then go back to the main time line to "import" the edits that you made.

>>Funny that it renders at normal pitch.

What sample rate are you rendering it at?

Peter

"If you edit a clips CC msgs, then you must import them back to the timeline manually."

I think this is where I was looking for the step-by-step. How do I import to the timeline? I DID try saving the midi file and reloading it, to no effect. I assume you're talking about something else here.

re: the EVP - good point. I rendered at 44.1. I'll probably just stick to Mr. Ray from now on.

Thanks for your help with this, Peter.

Right click on the event that exposes the clip on the main timeline.

If the clip contains CC msgs (or other importable msgs) you will have a menu option to "Create Envelopes from Clip". You can choose to create from all or select those that you want to update.

There is also a help subject on this:

Search help for

MIDI Track Envelopes and Keyframes

and locate

Create envelopes from controller data in a MIDI clip

on this help page.

Not an exhaustive discussion of this, but it does present the concept.

Hi Peter,

I dunno, I just find acid crashing a lot. I use some cracked plug-ins (am i the first person to ever admit that here?) so I attribute most of it to that, but a lot of cracks that used to work in 4 and 5 don't work (or even load) in 6. That's not your problem, but it makes me wonder what you guys are putting into the software, especially in light of your rootkit experiment.

But even discounting all the crashes I have where a dodgy plug-in could be the possible cause, I still get crashes just mucking around with a few loops and no plug-ins at all. Sometimes it happens when I'm adding a loop from the preview pane. Other times I'm just tweaking the volume and that's all it takes: "Acid Pro has encountered an error and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience."

I'm not saying it's unusable, but it still seems pretty buggy.

One other specific thing I can refer to is the loop marker in the timeline. If you adjust it while the project is playing, it's very common that it just starts playing some part of the song that doesn't correspond to the part I've selected with the loop. If I hit stop and then start again, it plays the correct part. This happens a LOT with MIDI, but also with loops etc.

There's other things but I can't remember at the moment. I've been compiling the second AcidPlanet loop disc so it's been more Sound Forge lately than Acid, but really I think the gist is that there is no consistent thing that causes the crashes, it seems to me very random other than the few things I mentioned above.

Anyway, I want to take a moment and say that overall Acid Pro 6 is a great piece of code, it's everything I wanted out of an upgrade...if the bugs weren't there and my old cracks still worked, I would have no complaints whatsoever. So please accept a 'great work' along with my gripes.

Cheers,
iLL

I don't know about the Feds, but maybe Sony will pass your registration info on:

Using cracked plugs is really silly -- you have no Idea of what was done to get the software to run without a key.

I can guarantee you that you can spend less money on DSP dynamics on software today and achieve great results if you know what you are doing.

For generators and samplers there is a whole world out there that is amazingly affordable and rocks the crap out of very expensive tools.

My last comment for you is that if you really want to estimate the reliability of ACID you should operate it under ideal conditions...

1. Set up your PC as an optimized daw
2. Install the best hardware for your system capabilities
3. Install the newest drives
4. Frequently test your hardware for compliance
5. Install the latest version of ACID
6. Run the software as it was intended -- lots of loops, midi, automation and DSP pluggins
7. Read the manual to see just how the authors think you should be doing things

Bye,
Kevin

Yeah, really. Considering what I put AP 6 through, I find it amazingly stable. Plus - there are lots of free vst's which are totally worthwhile. No need at all for cracks.

Well thanks for the sermon dudes. I don't make music for money and I still pay for things I use regularly (including Acid Pro 4, 5, and 6, Sound Forge 7 and 8, and CD Architect). I run very few cracks, and as I stated above, I get significant crashing even running Acid with just a few loops and no VST's whatsoever.

When companies start putting out products that work on the first run and stop externalizing their costs to the end-consumer, maybe I'll reconsider my stance on cracks. Meanwhile, I've got some nice white-noise emitting, save-disabled demos you might be interested in...

Kevin,

Can you pass on specific recommendations for affordable software in the categories you mention above. I already have drum sampling covered with FXPansion's DR-008 but I'm always looking for good effects and soft synths that won't break the bank...

Thanks!

DSP:
Izotope
wave arts
Kjaherus

Generators:
Imageline
Native Instruments
Spectrsonics

Each item is less than $400 on average but worth every penny when used in a DAW environment or live

As far as softsynths go, there is a group buy for Wusikstation. It is $50.00 and includes a lot of extras.

BTW, notice the title of this thread, and then we get to a discussion of cracks. Makes you wonder....

What it makes me wonder is why something that worked perfectly fine in Acid Pro 5 won't even load in Acid Pro 6.

"What it makes me wonder is why something that worked perfectly fine in Acid Pro 5 won't even load in Acid Pro 6."

Well, there is not much to wonder about! It's not as though a software upgrade just leaves the existing code as is and adds new modules - sometimes the upgrade involves rewriting sections of code, and it's quite possible that new bugs will creep in, even despite extensive regression testing. This is especially so with upgrades that significantly alter the core code - like the Acid 6 chages that involved multiple clips on a single track. It maybe frustrating, but there is no mystery here.

PS FWIW I have found Acid 6 the most stable version ever. I use very few software instruments though (I hate 'em).

Well -- I can also express sympathy with those who have issues with project translation.

I have honestly reduced my dependence on ACID -- now I simply feed ACID loops made in other softwares, and simply mix and automate them in the ACID environment.

Then I export my rendered tracks to either Pro-Tools or continue along in ACID.

I never use any midi nor VSTi's since I was very upset about the rise and decline of functional issues.

I don't use a lot of softsyths but those I use work very well in Acid Pro 6. I also find it the most stable version to date although I haven't used 5 and upgraded to 6 diretly from version 4 (Acid Pro 5 didn't have compelling enough advancements for my workflow to justify the upgrade but 6 certainly did).

Me, I do everything in Acid now. It offers all that I need and, eventhough MIDI editing is not as deep as in Sonar I can get my work done easier and quicker anyway and the entire app runs much smoother on my machine than Sonar ever did.

Like what? Do you have specific examples? For me, Acid Pro 6 is by far the most functional version to date. Inline MIDI editing, the Drum Grid and Drum Maps and more all amount to a much smoother user experience.

M-Audio Drum and Bass Rig
M-Audio Key Rig

Good for you -- your able to do everything in ACID. Maybe I will go that route in the future but for now maybe toolset and workflow is way more efficient, flexible and reliable.

I take it you are having problems with them when used in ACID 6?
Can you elaborate on the problems?

Hey Thanks Peter,

I really cant elaborate it just seems to act weird inside of ACID, glitchy sounds when I run multiple instances of it, which is just how I compose.

After I finish this project then I will come back to it.

So far ACID handles the loops and the automation very well.

Thanks - all
