You can separate the song into time slices. For example, you can select a part of the song from, say, 1 minute 3.2 seconds to 1 minute 8.1 seconds to get a 4.9 second sample that you can use as just that piece. If you beatmap the song you can choose, for example, measures 132 to 135 and have just that 4 measure section to reuse.

What you cannot do is pull out just the drum part or just the lead guitar and hear that without the other instruments or voices. This is impossible.

Of course, since you mention "published song", you should be aware that it is illegal to reuse copyrighted material without permission.

You need to PAINT the song on the empty track. If you use the Paint tool (not the Pencil) you can Ctrl+Click to paint the entire song with one click. Use the Chopper to chop it up into little bits and pieces and Chop to New Clip to save those pieces and new wave files.

As Chienworks said, then go call your lawyer because it is illegal to use other peoples work without their consent.
