Can anyone point me to a good web site where I can learn more about music hardware to use with Acid? I found pcmus.com and learned a great deal, but I want to get an audio interface and need some answers. I am looking at M-audio's Fast Track, Fast Track Pro and MobilePre as well as Line6's Toneport and Guitarport. Fast Track is 24bit/48kmhz, Fast Track Pro is 24/96 and MobilePre is 16/48. I understand a commercial CD is16/44 and that you need Acid Pro to support higher rates. I need to learn about these higher rates, and if a casual user can hear a big difference. Thanks for any help at all. |

I would at least go with a 24-bit interface for its lower noise floor. (You can eventually mix down to 16-bit later on.) The debate continually rages over how high a sample rate to use. According to the Nyquist Theorem, in order to accurately represent an analog frequency in the digital realm, it should be at least twice the frequency...and most humans can only hear about 20 kHz tops...which means that roughtly 40 kHz or higher sample rate should be plenty. They say you should use as high a sample rate as possible before mixing down to 44.1 kHz for CD, but I'm not sure how advantageous that would be given the above. (Besides, I'm no sound engineer.) ;) Iacobus |
