Subject:AC-3 player?

Can anyone recommend a simple (and free/cheap) way to play the AC-3 audio files that are encoded by Vegas? Sound Forge and WMP don't. There are a number of programs located on freedownloads.com but a lot of them are for converting files to another format, and then playing them. I'm sure you have all seen the dialog when Vegas completes encoding an AC-3 file. Windows gives you the option to play the file, but I have no program installed to do so. I would like to click on the "Open File" button and hear the AC-3 file play, Any suggestions? Thanks. |

Thanks for the tip on Media Player. It complained about opening an .ac3 file, but played it fine, in stereo, apparently using the downmix ? Sounded very good in headphones. What would be really helpful is a 5.1 surround player, or a plug-in for Media Player might work, I would think . . Thanks again, Rick Z |

I know this is not quite the answer but if you just wanted the sound you could save it as an WMV file maybe adding a static picture if needed because WMV files support surround sound. |

No, that's not necessary. It just requires something to stop WMP (or sim) downmixing. Klite codec pack, for example will allow WMP, or anything else to use the AC3 as a full 5.1 with no downmixing. |
