Subject:Install Splash Hanging Freeze Fix

Hopefully this post will help others who may have similar issues.

I was having problems installing Acid software both 5.0 & 6.0 in the past. Also I have dealt with Media Manager crashing and SQL errors which left it useless to me and better off disabled. I had recently migrated to XP Professional from 2000 Professional. My .NET Framework along with the Windows Installer was up to date. However, I kept having the 6.0 installation freeze up during the SQL installation phase. I had done the whole disabling virus programs yada yada but it was still getting stuck.

The way I fixed the problem was to simply hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and watched which tasks were running. I saw several msiexec.exe files running at once that were generated by the install program. Basically the trick is that when you encounter the freeze if you end task on the correct one the install will finish and you'll be in business. Otherwise the install will crap out and you will have to repeat the process again. I would recommend strongly with setting restore points prior to attempting anything. The successful file that I found to end was always 7K of memory usage. When I ended this task the installation continued with success. I assume Microsoft would be to blame here (and yes my installer is up to date).

Okay now on to problem number 2.

So everything is working fine now when suddenly I was changing some sound card settings and the program crashed. I was getting some graphics corruption as well right up before that. Ending task in XP is basically impossible at this point. The only way to terminate was to reboot my system.

What was happening now as that every single Sony product would indeed hang at the start or splash screen then nothing. The only way to close the program would be to shutdown my computer. After much searching I found an article Answer ID 1382 "Application Hangs on Splash Screen on Startup". This gave some good overall tips.

Having recently upgraded/updating my graphics card I suspected this could be interfering somehow. I had also noticed my mouse was acting funny also almost like it was low on battery which it was not. My graphics card is an ATI RADEON X1650. They just released another driver/catalyst update so I tried that and I updated my sound card as well just to be sure. The programs pretty much prompt you to uninstall the previous one first but this is always a good rule of thumb when updating anything especially drivers.

During this process I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Sony software products (Sound Forge & Acid) and nothing would come up past the splash screen. When I lowered the hardware acceleration in the display settings i started to get results. After updating the driver as mentioned above it seems to have fixed the issue. One other thing that I did was disabled a program in my startup menu. To access this in XP you go to RUN and type MSCONFIG. Go to STARTUP tab and you'll see everything that starts up. I was having problems with shutdown also with some ATI program freezing up upon system shutdown. Windows would have to end task before it would do anything. To keep this from happening I disabled CLIStart.exe and I haven't seen the problem since.

I did try version Acid 6.0c and it seemed to have some definite bugs including the well-known beatmapper problem. Version D so far is working very good and I haven't really seen anything major. I would definitely say that it has been the most stable release that I have used so far other than 5.0c.

Also for the record I am using an Audigy ZS Platinum sound card. Before with Windows 2000 and 5.0c I was experiencing a weird problem where the latency would increase anytime I went into the beatmapper. I would have to go into the options menu and simply hit apply and/or okay and it would go back to normal again. In installing XP I decided to use a raid-1. I am also no longer accessing files on an external usb drive or over the network. These factors probably help with latency issues.

The only thing I need to figure out now is how I can make windows hide SFK files so that I do not have to see them every time I look in the directory. These help store the visual of the tracks so I can see why they are important but I certainly would love if you could set some option that would store them in a particular temp directory. Sony please take note of this and include in a future update. This reminds me of those annoying PK or "peak" files from Adobe Audition.

And then last but not least I did have a couple problems initially when opening some files from 5.0 in 6.0. Basically they would crash the program. The way I fixed this problem was I disabled "save media-usage relationships" in the options menu.

Hope this helps.
