When I try to install ACID Pro 6.0d under Vista I get an error installing the Media Manager. Vista tells me that the MS SQL desktop engine has known compatibility problems with Vista. If I tell it to install anyway it MS SQL fails to install.

ACID can run fine from there. But there is no Media Manger. Any ideas if or when there will be a solution?

This is the same with Vegas.

Vista is here. The commercial release was last week, and the retail release is next month.

Thank you in advance.

It takes a while for software to become complient with new operating systems.

According to Microsoft's own Q&A

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 8, 2006 ...Windows Vista’s journey is not yet done. PC makers, device manufacturers and software developers can finalize work on their products and applications to ensure great customer experiences when Windows Vista becomes available -- to our volume license customers this month and consumers on January 30, 2007.

So the code is stable enough for vendors to finish their compatibility work. Don't expect that work to be complete until the end of next month. That being said, listen to your comment:

Vista tells me that the MS SQL desktop engine has known compatibility problems with Vista.

The MS SQL Desktop Engine comes form Microsoft! Vista comes from Microsoft! Why don't you go tell Microsoft to make THEIR OPERATING SYSTEM compatible with THEIR SOFTWARE!!! Then maybe the Media Manager would install just fine. I would be very worried that Vista is breaking existing Microsoft products. It doesn't make me want to run out and buy it any time soon.

MSDE will NOT be supported under Vista at all. Read on.

"The commercial release was last week"

Wrong again. Business (with very specific MS Software agreements) and MSDN subscribers certainly is not "commercial" in any sense. When you can buy Vista off the shelf at Staples....then it's "commercial"

Don't expect any mainstream "commercial" third party Vista support until at least Spring 2007.

I won't be touching Vista for at least three years. Windows XP has just barely gotten to the point that the worst of the bugs are fixed.

Cheers,

Yeah, when is Acid Linux coming out?

But seriously, I had the same problem. The issue is probably with the build of Vista you have. For me, Acid didn't work for x64 build 5600. I then found a torrent for build x64 5744 and it works fine.

As for Vista, it seems pretty nice. I'll support it.

Just like I should have done with the Acid 6.0c update, I will wait to get Vista until I learn from others' experiences with the OS. I'm still on Windows 2000, and have yet to discover any advantage that my son's computer, running XP, has over mine, using similar software. No hurry with Vista, and meanwhile I can use Acid Pro worry-free.

Ouch!

I seem to have touched a nerve. Touchy place, this is.

I just wanted to know if there was any information on when or if ACID would be compatible. I didn't know I was going to unleash a topic for every one to spew their deepest darkest misgivings about Microsoft.

ACID"s dependency on MS SQL MSDE has for years been the weakest link in what has traditionally been the a very robust piece of software. I've been using ACID for many many years since maybe version 2. While I love the Media Manager feature, it literally took a couple of years before that piece of the program was trouble free for me.

Sony should really move to MySQL or something else.

So I take it from the lack of helpful information that Sony Media hasn't said anything about any plans for making ACID compatible with Vista.

In the meantime the rest of the program seems to work fine, and I've also got Ableton.

Thanks.

Vista ain't done 'till Sony won't run.

"seem to have touched a nerve. Touchy place, this is."

Well - your blanket statement that Vista "is here" and is a "commercial" release seemed to have a particular tone to it that indicated that Sony should drop what they are doing and get you compatible with Vista. At least that's the way I read it.

And there is plenty of helpful info in here. Media Manager (as it is right now using MSDE) will never be supported in Vista - so that one is up to Sony to solve. Secondly - Sony will most likely not say anything about supporting Acid on a non-commercially available OS until some date past Jan 30, 2007 - the "official" release day of Vista as per MS.

What else are you missing in terms of helpful info?

I don't know enough to talk about Vista and MSDE or other technical terms, but I go back to what I said before.
Vista x64 RC1 build 5600 = NO ACID
Vista x64 RC2 build 5744 = ACID (and Media Manager works just as good as it did for me in Windows 2000).

I agree that Vista is here. The Vista code base that you get if you're part of a large company (volume license) is the same as what will appear in boxes in late January. I realize there are different versions of vista coming; those CD's are manufactured and I'm quite sure have the same code base as what you can download as a corporate client today.

so...if I were sony I'd make sure my products will work with the computers that will be shipping from Dell, HP, and the like...and soon. Like this month. It would seem Sony has had months to work on Acid, Vegas, and the like to get them to run under Vista. Let's hope we hear something soon.

Yes I know that the entire world is not upgrading to Vista in January 2007. I also know that many people buying a new machine to use for multiple purposes (including music/audio/video) will get Vista on it from the start.

"Yes I know that the entire world is not upgrading to Vista in January 2007. "

Most audio pros won;t be upgrading until Spring 2008. There are simply too many incompatibilities and driver issues to even consider Vista at this time

"I also know that many people buying a new machine to use for multiple purposes (including music/audio/video) will get Vista on it from the start."

Anyone who buys a box that comes with Vista - is going to have immediate problems due to non working software. The hardware that comes with a new box will work - but try to add your existing audio card etc etc....instant problems.

And Sony support - not right away...especially for Acid - the Media Manager itself is a big enough problem to require a very large set of changes. I estimate NO Vista support until the summer at the soonest....
