OT: need a good cheap web host w/ email?

p@mast3rs wrote on 12/13/2006, 2:15 PM
Ok, this is the third time someone has hacked my gmail account. So instead of continuing this silly ordeal, Im going to opt for my own web space yet again and control my own email.

Anyone seen any cheap server space (dont need a lot currently, maybe gig or two max) that provides unlimited email that is rather cheap monthly and a low start up cost?

I am not trying to be lazy but working on finals right now and I dont have the time to search for deals. Thanks.

1and1

About a buck a month for email only, plus the cost of your domain if you don't have one.

Details Here

I've been using www.icdsoft.com and the service has been reliable & easy to manage. It's probably more than the 1&1 (heard it's pretty good too but've never tried it myself).

Fatcow Mini Moo - $5 bucks a YEAR - about 20meg of storage and one or two email addresses.

I've got all my kids on their own websites with pointers to my main site, where they've got whatever stuff they really need. (Hey for $5 bucks a year, I can AFFORD to be a Big Shot!)

Check out www.CowboysOfFlorida.com
The main page which you see is a MiniMoo. The movies and other big stuff are on my main site. The interface is totally invisible.

Later you can upgrade to the full schmazoo for $99/year including 2 gig of space and other stuff.

As you've seen, you'll get a plethora of suggestions. But don't decide on price alone. Check with sites that monitor and review webhosts.

Well, I'd like to know what you mean my "hacked my gmail account"? I've got a couple & know lots of folks with one (due to my recommendation & invitation) & I've not heard of this problem? What are the symptoms?

As for webhosting -- lots of the cheap, shared servers get email spoofed, too. I'm trying to figure out ways to prevent. Check that they at least have SPF (Sender Policy Framework).

Thanks to all who have responded.

PJ, I checked out jiffynet and they look really good. I looked into the 2gb option but they dont seem to have the option to register a domain name with it. Is it there and I am not just not seeing it?

I have been with Lunar Pages for about four years now, and they are great.

I wouldn't buy on price alone either, but they are $6.95/month for 35 gigabytes of storage, which is a LOT of videos.

Also, you can use the Google gmail mail interface with your own domain mail, if you like the look and feel of gmail but want your own domain mail.

I love that too.

I use www.ihostvm.com and they have added support for anything I have asked thus far and even changed my records so I could have google host my email while retaining my atjrazzcreations dotcom email. Give it a look Patrick.

I ended up going with ihostvm.com Lunar looked really good except the minimum was 3 months at billing and I just dont have the $90 extra right now especially with Christmas coming up and all.

Again, thank you to all who recommended hosts. I sincerely appreciate it.

edit: oh yeah, www.patrickmasters.com in 72 hours. Guess I will have to throw together a website now. Arrghhh!

For a cheap, functional, easy WYSIWYG editor try sitespinner from VirtualMechanics.com. I got an offer in the mail a little while ago from them stating that I can share a link with a friend and they can get the product for half off. Here is the link.

Now this link is only for Patrick :)

J Razz, much appreciated. But I figure since I teach Web Design, I should probably do my own site or at the very least let one of my students get some experience. But I do sincerely appreciate the kind offering. Again, this is what makes this forum so incredibly great. Much thanks.

Okay then, scratch that last statement- the offer is for anyone but Patrick :)

Patrick,

I use Dreamhost. I decided on it after a posting or two here. I have been very satisfied.

They have a one click install of Joomla CMS and other stuff. Lots of control over stuff in their custom control panel.

When I signed up I used one of the promo codes (go to their forum and look for a $97 dollar one) and I signed up for the crazy domain insane plan. I spent only $22 dollars after the promo code and that gets me a full year of hosting and one free domain registration. I have about 10 sites hosted on that plan now. --all for that $22 dollar first year. When it is time for me to renew it is 7.95/ month or 9.95/month depending on if I prepay for 1 or 2 years or pay monthly.

I would give you my referral link but that is not how you get your discount. I do not have a promo code of my own to give you so you need to look for one on the Beginners forum at Dreamhost.

They also have FREE hosting for Charitable/Non-profit organizations. This is a new thing and they automatically give you there top tier account for free if you can produce a 501c3 document.

Good luck,

TomE

Gotta say I'm quite pleased with Globat.com

feel free to put in day-vidsproductions.com in the reference if you use it, no difference to me really ( I just use it for email and FTP mostly ). but the price is quite good, and it's been right decent for me. I highly recomend.

I use Easy CGI, tell them I sent you and you will get a top level website and 500 email addresses and all the bells and whistles for $7.95pm. Only weaknes, no python scripting but there is a text alternative for Google sitemaps. Excellent service for the buck.

godaddy.com. Economy plan is < $4/month, and includes 5 GB space, 250 GB/month bandwidth, your choice of linux (php, etc) or windows (asp) hosting, 500 free email addresss. The deluxe plan ($7/month) gets you python and other languages, too.

I use yahoo hosting - small business option. You get your own domain name, 2GB of storage and 200 e-mail addresses. Also supports on-line transactions if you go up a notch on product choice.

Microsoft has a new free service;

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officelive/default.aspx

I use the Basic service (free).
No problems so far. Very user friendly.

They do ask for a credit card during setup, but don't charge anything to it.

But what do you mean by someone "hacking" your email account?

Depending on what you mean by that, getting your own domain, website and email may not prevent it from happening again.

I have several websites for my own domains, with email accounts on each. I even use techniques and tools for "masking" my email response addresses on those sites. But if someone sends me a message through my website and then notes the "to" address and adds it to their address book --- and THEN if a hacker gets into their address book and harvests it, then my "protected" email address starts getting spam, and even gets spoofed.
This has happened to me more than once, with "protected" addresses on my own websites. Similarly if I send someone a message using my address as the "from" address... it may then get added to the recipient's address book and become vulnerable.

Just mentioning this because if this is the kind of hacking you mean, you may not wind up any better off after getting your own website.

well, this is what I mean. Yesterday morning, I logged on a got my email and went to school. I came home and checked my email and it said my password was incorrect. So I cleared my browser cache and re-entered my information. Password was still incorrect. So I checked the forgot password option. Now I have to wait five days before I can get my email if I answer my challenge question.

Point is, with my own domain, I can change it at a moments notice and Ill never get locked out of my own email account like I am now. Which is really embarrassing since I have some work due tomorrow that I can not access currently. But all is well now. I just have to update my address list with my new email address.

Seems to me that with Gmail, Hotmail and others of that ilk, you are getting exactly what you pay for...

Another vote for Lunar Pages. I've been with them for 2 years now and have hardly noticed any down time. They are professional, easy to reach by phone or live chat and reasonably priced.
