Someone bought this for me as a gift, and while you can certainly do a lot with it, that's the problem. All I want to do it play a karaoke track and record my vocals on it. I have the karaoke tracks, and I can transfer them from the CD to the program. And I record my voice on my microphone, but I can't figure out how to put the two together. Can't I simply play a track and then record while I sing along to it? It seems so simple. I just can't figure it out. There are so many choices, and the manual is so vast. Nowhere do I see it spelled out in simple language I can understand. Can anyone help me, please? |

What Ben is telling you is that you have the wrong program to do what you want. Go buy Jam Trax for $19.95, and it will do what you're trying to accomplish. Sound Forge is the wrong tool, for what you want to do. Jam Trax is what you need, or Acid, or Vegas or any other program that will do "multitrack" recording. You need something designed for multitracking; Forge can't do this. You certainly can't sing along to existing file with Forge. I was only half-joking when I suggested the link above - it would I'm sure do it for you easier than learning a full-on application. Ben Edit: just saw Bradly's post. Hmm...well thanks guys. That bums me out, but what can you do? I looked at Jam Trax and the others, but I can't find anyplace on any of them that says I can import musical tracks and then record, just that I can use it to make up new music and then record. I suppose I will have to get a karaoke machine or something if I want to do it. It seems odd though that there wouldn't be software that would do the job. C'est la vie. |

ACID can do this easily. just import the audio track, hit record and start singing. :) |

A cheap, scummy option with Sound Forge is to play the karaoke track in Windows Media Player, set your sound card to record from "mixed stereo out" or "What U Hear", then sing into the mic while the song is playing. It'll take a lot of experimenting to get a good balance and the quality won't be fantastic. You'll also record any sounds your computer produces such as the "you've got mail" beep, so you'll want to disable computer sounds. Much easier to get a real multitrack program. |

Well, I got ACID but I still can't make the &%$#@!! thing work. I can import the track and I can listen to it in preview, and I can drag it up to the track view, but no beats appear and every time I try to record it just uses the stupid backbeat tracks that are already loaded. Perhaps it is time to admit I am an idiot. |
