I have a dell 1.8 ghz cpu
a firebox
and recording live through sound forge 8
everytime I record and play back, its very choppy and distorted
I have tryd every buffer/ latency size
yet still having issues
whats going on here?

What kind of distorion are we talking here? Peak clipped, overdriven pre-amp? What is your source and where does it come from. Mixer. Mic?.. Input setting: line level, mic level?
Does the waveform show the gaps? Do they happen at the same place during playback?
Sample rate? Bit depth?
We wil need more info to offer suggestions. (My car does not start, what's wrong with it)
That said, shut down ALL non-essential programs running in the background, i.e.: screensavers, anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewalls, ect, ect, ect.

There is severe gaps in playback
coming from a line source or mic
this happens whenever I record anything
I have disabled all programs including wireless
I set sample rate and latecy and cpu both high and low in combination without any luck.

Do you see the gaps in the waveform.. or just hear them at random on playback?

I think I know what you're talking about. I'm having a similar problem. Sometimes playback is just fine in Sound Forge 8, but other times it's got bad static and gaps. BUT, if I save the file and play it back in another program (like Windows Media Player) it sounds perfectly fine. I've tried uninstalling/re-installing, but it still happens. It's an intermittent problem and very annoying. I still don’t know how to resolve it.

Hello,
I had a similar problem when I first got my FirePod.
Make sure that your audio drives have the option "use DMA if present" or something like that in the Device Manager.
You might also have to set this in the BIOS as well.
I installed an additional audio drive and could not get it to stop clicking and popping (no real drop outs, though) until I had my drive set to use Direct Memory Access (DMA).

Your system, at 1.8 Ghz might actually be a little underpowered to handle large files (depending on how much RAM you have - rule of thumb: you can never have too much memory).

Click OPTIONS - PREFERENCES - Audio Tab

Under the audio tab you can add time to the recording buffer (in seconds). Experiment with that, as well as the playback buffer. If the gaps are occurring in the recording itself (showing up in the wave form) then it's a recording buffer issue...if you're not SEEING gaps in playback, but hearing them, then it's a playback issue.

I'm not totally sure that's the problem. Again, I'd need to know how much RAM you have on your system. If it's 512mb or less...then you need more.
