Think about the source. Is it stereo? If not use mono. How many mouths do you have? One? Then vocals should be mono unless you are recording a choir in which case two stereo mics will capture the live performance better. Drums are mono instruments as well as is guitar and bass. Synths can be stereo with panning modulations but a synth solo I would definitely record in mono. You should really have two different signals in each channel to warrant using stereo to record a source. If the source comes from one place, then use mono. ~jr |

To add to what JohnnyRoy said, I usually record my guitar in mono a few times (about 4 but never really more than that), then pan the resulting recordings left and right. Just gives a nice, thick "wall of sound" stereo image and sounds better than recording in stereo with chorus effects. Iacobus |

Typically, kick, snare, bass and voice (or horn) should be mono (kick and bass because of the omni-directionality of the low frequency content)...everything else is "season to taste". Modern guitars are recorded in mono with about a couple dozen recorded and hard panned per side and a stereo guitar bed via chorus (POD, Linkin Park, etc). Keys are up to you. A technique I hear a lot lately is mono instruments with stereo fx (diff delays on each side, modulated reverb, etc.). I will say, though, if a recorded instrument or sample has stereo info which adds to the overall feel of the track, then by all means...keep it stereo!! This is all IMHO.
