Solo a track.
Mute the track while soloed.
Solo supercedes Mute. (I think that is dumb design, but whatever, I am sure someone else likes it.)
Now Un-Solo the track.
Track Un-mutes.
WHY?

That is a little odd. I suppose the programmers had to decide between a number of possible behaviors when selecting two mutually-exclusive features. I agree that solo should probably have higher precedence than mute; just seems to make sense to me. On the other hand, what would probably make a whole lot more sense is that clicking either button un-clicks the other. They are mutually exclusive after all.

They also changed to this behavior in the newer version(s) of Vegas (I am still on VV3).
I could get on board with it if someone could tell me why it is programmed this way.
It just doesn't make any sense. I could understand if there were some kind of grouping scheme, ie a master-solo and master-mute for selected tracks....
No, actually that still makes no sense.

The behavior that makes sense is to activate whatever you do, mute or solo, when you do it.
If it is muted and subsequently solo'd, the mute button is turned off. If you solo, and then mute, the mute button stays down, but doesn't mute. Then if you take solo OFF, mute also is turned off. When solo is turned off, the mute should stay on.

Peter, anyone, please explain why this behaves this way?

Still wondering about this feature, and is there a chance we might change it back to the way it used to be? Make it optional?

that is the way it should be indeed. i think it was like this in ACID 4, but in ACID 6 the relation between the mute and the solo function makes no sense really.

Exactly my thought, but surely it was designed that way for a reason?
If I had an explanation of the design philosophy behind this I might be able to make it work in my favor, but so far nobody at Sony nor any users can/will explain this behavior.
