Can you do this in Acid 6? Ideally I would love to load some great one shot samples (drums, etc.) into Acid, then program a pattern with a controller like the Akai MPD by tapping in the beats and rhythms. I'd even settle for the computer keyboard if I could do it with multiple samples/tracks, not just one as in 5.0. Is there anyway to do this? Or possibly is there some type of plug-in that could be used to achive this functionality? THANKS... |

Do you mind elaborating on how this works? Are you able to load one-shot samples in Acid tracks as before and somehow use Kompact to be able to play them with an external controller? Or, do you load the one-shots into Kompact only? When you program the samples with the controller, what shows up? different audio tracks with audio data? or MIDI tracks with MIDI data? Are they seperated into multiple tracks so that I can EQ and effect each sample (for example, kick, hat, snare) separately? If it is just MIDI data that is recorded, can I use standard track EQ and effects on it? If Kompact is actually generating the sound of the samples, are there any ASIO contentions? Sorry, I'm just a newbie to MIDI within an applicaiton like Acid. Any help is appreciated... |

You basically insert Kompakt, which starts with a clean slate. You then use Kompakt's browser (click the button marked, "browser," in the upper left) and then browse to your desired sample. Click and drag the sample onto the virtual keyboard you see in the lower right. Release. The key is now assigned to that sample. That's it in a nutshell. There's oodles more, like being able to creatively mangle the sample using Kompakt's interface. There's a manual (in Adobe Reader format) that installs in the program group when Kompakt is installed. It'll tell you everything you need to know about the VSTi. Iacobus |

So...when you actually trigger the samples loaded into Kompact with a controller and record, what actually gets recorded in Acid? Each sample it's own audio track? Or are separate MIDI tracks recorded for each sample? If it's MIDI, can you put effects and EQ on the MIDI track just like an audio track, or does that change? Sorry so many questions, I just really want to know how it works before I invest in it. And the demo version isn't a lot of help because I would have to uninstall the current version to run it, I'm sure. Thanks again... |

Only the MIDI data gets recorded. The data gets sent to Kompakt, which then interprets the data. For example, say you have the sound of an explosion assigned to C3 in Kompakt. If you record the MIDI note C3 in ACID, ACID simply sends that data to Kompakt, which then plays back the explosion. MIDI is simply a set of instructions for playing back those samples in Kompakt. You could even change the instrument in Kompakt using the same MIDI data that was recorded before. You cannot put DirectX effects at the track level like you can the digital audio tracks BUT you can work with the MIDI spec to work with effects like vibrato. You can also insert DirectX effects at the bus level and control automation from there (using the bus tracks view ; B is the shortcut). Iacobus |

Thanks for the detailed explanation...I'm understanding it now. |

One more follow up question: when recording MIDI with Kompact in Acid, is each sample given its own MIDI track? What I am getting it is I see the value in laying down the right MIDI sequences using different samples (kick, snare, hat), and then rendering each sample's MIDI information to a separate Audio track, so that I can EQ and effect each drum sound differently as an audio track in Acid. does it work like this? Easy to do? Recommended? Are there other methods to achieve the same goal? Thanks again... |

It depends on how the instruments are configured. If I remember correctly, by default, Kompakt sends instruments to all MIDI channels. If you want to send different instruments to different MIDI channels, click each instrument and then click the MIDI icon (it looks like a little plug) in the upper left and choose a channel. If you do it this way, don't forget to send each MIDI track's output to the desired MIDI channel for playback. Otherwise, ACID will play every track back on channel 1. Try checking out the various Kompakt NKI files via Get Media, specifically, "Gas Feathers," which gives an example of using multiple instruments on different MIDI tracks. (There are also a couple NKI files called "Drum Grid I" and "Drum Grid II." Though those are strictly one channel only, you can easily create a new multi with the samples that came with the Drum Grid NKIs.) Iacobus |
