Is there a way to hear precounts from the metronome when recording?

Nope. There is a no pre-roll.

You can get around this the old fashion way by adding a click track to your project. Then when you’re done, mute the click track and select everything but the first 4 beats of your project and render selected redion only.

You're kidding. There HAS to be a count-in...has there ever been recording software that didn't have it? That's nutty!

Yes it is nutty. But everytime I'm frustrated about the fact there's no count in metronome, or no drag and drop of clips between tracks; I'm like "yeah... but that's the two only things I really miss in this software".
