Subject:Any Sound Forge 9 rumors?

It is coming up on 2 years now since Sound Forge 8 was released and I'm still using Sound Forge 6. Back in the summer was was wanting to upgrade for posterities sake mostly. But half expected something before the 1.5 year Vegas upgrade. Now looks like Vegas gets two upgrades between Sound Forge.

There's nothing I hate worse than buying an aging product and 2-3 months later a new version is released outside the free grace period. At this point (1.75 year mark) there's no way I'd risk upgrading to SF8 unless I get word that there won't be a SF9 for another 6-8 months.

So I was wondering. How much longer shall I have to wait. Any rumors floating around out there on the next release time frame?

Unfortunately my speculations suggests that there wont be any upgrade soon. Why do I suggest this? Well there are two primary reasons:

(01) The pro-sumer market is more focused on music "creation" and video "creation" than they are on high end audio editing and processing. Most audio loops and samples are already well treated to begin with. Of course there are situations in which you may wish to treat the audio in detail, but most people perform basic operations. That is why the current feature set of Sound Forge is acceptable to most people.

(02) Sony Media software is in a position where they must focus on the applications which generate the most attention and money for the company. The ACID family and the Vegas Family require extensive monitoring and updating because in the market they serve there is subtantial competition. However in the pure Audio editing market the competition has been statis so far. There are only a few editors out there that are truly moving forward with the technology.

That is my opinion, for what it is worth.

Upgrading SF may not be a priority for Sony but it will come, it's money for old rope and it's one application they have which has a large % of market share. However, 8 had so many new and important features, esp. ASIO and VST support, we have a nice wishlist for 9 but probably most of the requests won't be fulfilled as they will probably require a lot of development/beta testing and push up the cost to a prohibitive level, where people will go for wavelab or samplitude master anyway. Audition is really the other competitor to be considered and it hasn't had an upgrade for a while either, plus it's serving a different market having multitrack capabilities etc.

Vegas has mainly had upgrades to stay competitive in DVD authoring and video editing and Acid needs to keep up with Ableton Live and FL who have both had 2 new versions within 18 months.

The FL STUDIO development team is incredible -- they have a very powerful talent pool and I am completely amazed at what they program does for the cost.

If memory serves me correctly, Adobe released a new version of Audition earlier this year.

The Audition upgrade was a biggy for Adobe -- it was the first serious upgrade to the software since Adobe bought it a few years ago.
