I know this is no consolation but I can open Vegas 5 projects in Vegas 7 just fine. What happens when you try and open the project? Is it just missing plug-ins? This should work.
Hmmm... well, what happens is that Vegas opens and says it's trying to open the .veg file. The little percentage field on the lower-left stays at 0% and when I go over to Task Manager, Vegas 7 is using 50% CPU (I have a hyperthreaded CPU) and just hangs. Gave up after about ten minutes.
I'll open in V5 when I get home and check the plugins. I'm also currently trying the V5 -> V6 -> V7 thing to see if that works.
Come to think of it, I did use VASST's Ultimate S on the project... don't know if that has any bearing.
Just do this for me - please? I know it sounds stupid, but just go into MS Explorer, COPY the veg to a different folder and rename it. Then try and open this copied/renamed veg. If I'm wrong - fine! But if it works, gotta be better than a reinstall any day! Lol!
Upgraded Ultimate S and reinstalled Vegas 7. Even tried Grazie's suggestion. Rats. I'll need to wait until I get home, but I also need to try to open some other V5 projects. Might just be this one that is acting squirrely.
Sorry to dredge up this sorry topic, but I can't understand why V5 and V6 will open all these video clips with no problem at all, but V7 stalls.
If I File>Import Media and even just single-click on the file (which normally shows the file attributes), Vegas 7 hangs. CPU stays at 50% but no progress is ever made.
Video opens perfectly well in:
- AfterEffects 6.5
- Windows Media Player
- Windows Movie Maker
- Vegas 5 & 6
It is a DV AVI Type2 file recorded with Serious Magic's DVRack. Most of the files recorded during the same session open flawlessly, but there are a few that refuse to open with VV7. The other software listed above, including VV5 and VV6 open the file with no problem.
Up from the depths of the grave arose... this topic!
Well, I have upgraded Vegas to 7.0b and it still hangs when opening the same 5-6 AVI files. All were recorded with DVRack and open fine with Vegas 5 & 6, AfterEffects, Windows Media Player, etc.
Again, here is my workflow:
1) Open Vegas 7.0b
2) In Project Media, navigate to the folder containing AVIs
3) Single-click on any other AVI, and I see the properties for the AVI pop up.
4) Single-click on one of the troubled AVIs and the properties fields remain blank
5) Progress bar on lower-left of timeline shows 0% and doesn't increase
6) In Task Manager, Vegas uses 50% of the CPU (mine in Hyperthreaded) and the software hangs
7) Force Vegas to quit.
I suppose if anyone at Sony is willing, I can place one of the video clips on a server. Otherwise, I'll open in another application and convert to a different video clip. Any ideas? VirtualDub won't open a Vegas DV file and AfterEffects won't keep the audio with the video. Any freeware editors that will open a Vegas DV file?
BTW, "DustBunny" and "Pullmanite" are one and the same user.
I too have had problems with DVRack HDv2 files hanging Vegas.
I have found that what makes a difference is *how you stop the recording session in DVRack*.
If I stop the camera, then stop the record, the resulting file and Vegas are not happy with each other.
(1) I stop the record session *before* the camera stops.
(2) I empty DVRack and deal normally with the file.
(3) I close and re-open DVRack.
If I get a good file and try to record a second file without restarting DVRack, the second file will make Vegas unhappy. This happens with V6d - I'd be interested to know if V7b exhibits the same "feature" - because if so we'll have to report it to DVRack -oops, Adobe.
These files were recorded with slave recording, so the camcorder and DVRack started/stopped recording at the same time. Also strange is the fact that these very same files work wonderfully in 6.0d, but not in the "new and improved" 7.0b. I can certainly find a workaround, but there is a bug somewhere in Vegas 7.0d that may have consequences for other users.
