Subject:Memory Error opening new project in Acid 6b

Since upgrade to acid 6b when I open a project it works fine but when I try to close and start or open a new project I get this error "an error occurred while opening one or more files. The system is low on memory" I'm not sure why because there are no indications from the task monitor that the memory is low. I never had this error w/ Acid pro 5 or with any other applications. When this occurs I have no other apps running. This is my system info: Version: 5.01.2600 (Service Pack 2) Language: English System locale: English User locale: English Processor Class: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3400+ Identifier: AuthenticAMD Number of processors: 1 MMX available: Yes SSE available: Yes SSE2 available: Yes SSE3 available: No Display Primary: 1280x800x32 Memory Physical memory: 785.3 MB Paging memory available: 1,525.8 MB Virtual memory possible: 2,097.0 MB I searched the forums but did not find anything similar. If anyone knows what the problem could be please help. Thanks for your help. |

I uninstalled and did a fresh download and install. I can open one project and play and work within that project w/ no problems but when i try to open a new project I get "an error occurred while opening one or more files" and the system is low on memory. I have 786mb of memory and no other apps running. So I'm still at a loss of why this happens in acid 6b. I don't get this with acid 5 or vegas 4 or sound forge 8. I would think that if it was truly a memory problem that something would happen with another app. .............ANYBODY have an idea? |

What if you tried closing the project (Ctrl+F4) and then try to open another project? Does the problem still occur then? Iacobus |

Have you made any "performance" optimizations for Windows? Like disabling services and such that are recommened by a number of web sites? Peter |

No luck. It does the same. After I open 1 project and close it want start a new one. I have to completely close program and start over. Thanks for the suggestion. |

I did make some performance optimizations back before Acid 5. I recently installed another 512mb of memory giving a total of 768mb. It's strange because Acid 4 and 5 ran extremely well with 512mb on this machine. I don't understand what could possibly be using up memory resources. I can run Vegas 4, sound forge 8, live 4 while playing guitar with Amplitude live and still not cause any memory errors. ANY other suggestions. How low does the memory available have to go before the program stops functioning properly? Do I need 1Gig of memory for Acid 6 to run smooth? |

No, your memory should be fine. So you did change settings on Windows or not? If so, what specific settings did you change? Peter |

I optimized using musicxp.net tips. There is @ 25 changes. I did them all except disabling system restore. I reloaded Acid5 and get the same behavior. The only other thing I can think of is my antivirus software. I will try to keep eliminating until I find it and report back. If anyone else has any ideas I'm open to try. Thanks |

There is one MusicXP tweak that is incorrect, even though they talk a good game...ironically, it's the first one listed! Processor scheduling should NOT be set to background services; it SHOULD be set to Programs (Applications). Setting processor scheduling to Programs will deliver much higher overall performance, especially for disk access and sample rate conversion. The application -- specifically, a real time audio application like ACID -- is the one responsible for assembling the data, getting it from the drives, summing it, proccessing it, doing splits for aux sends and reverb, etc. If the app does not have enough cpu, it doesn't matter whether the sound card can play with smaller buffers or not. Also, any virus checkers running in the background is a definite no-no when performing any real time audio tasks. Be aware that merely "disabling" anti-virus in the System Tray won't cut it...you must stop the Services, as well as terminate these programs in Task Manager. Hope this helps, Mike E. Dee |

We don't support many of the changes recommended by musicxp.net as many of these "tweaks" will disable system services that ACID requires. Peter Message last edited on10/7/2006 9:06:59 PM bypwppch. |

Hi, Peter - I'm not too fond of a number of MusicXP's service-related tweaks. It would be of great help if you would list the services that ACID requires to function properly. Although I am quite sure that I am not disabling one too many services (since I have not experienced such issues with ACID), it still would be nice to know. :) Thank you very much! Best regards, Mike E. Dee |

Mike E. Dee You are absolutely right. I did this just before reading your post. The problem is resolved. I ran a virus scan, detected a bug and then disabled my virus software. (however I didn't change the processor scheduling) No more memory error. I also agree that Sony should post a list that they recommend. Using one machine for general work and a DAW is not the best practice for having full optimization. Thanks for your help and suggestions and also thanks Peter for your followup. I still think Acid is the best software for music creation. Peace |
