I just upgraded from Acid 5 to 6.0b and have found that when trying to preview one shots they do not play back at all except a couple of seconds on very small files. It acts like it wants to play but nothing..I open Acid 5 and no troubles at all. Ancid 6 previews loops but not one shots??

Update, any one shot that is over 130kb in size will not playback in the preview explorer. drag it onto the timeline and no trouble.... No problems in Acid 5. Any ideas I have tried everything I can think of. Updated drivers ect.

So far we are not reproducing this here.

I've been trying to reproduce this issue as well and everything is working fine for me. What else should I know? Are you using ASIO drivers? Wav? Are the one shot files that you are playing back homemade? purchased from Sony? Downloaded? Are they 16-bit/44.1KHz? 24/96?

Please, give me some more information.
Nate

Yes ASIO driver... latest one for M-audio FW 410 The One-shots are .wav 16-bit 44.1 from sample CD's all work fine in Acid 5 on same machine.

Here is an example using a sony sample CD Trance NRG 1

Open the loops folder go to one shots open the Kiks folder

Kicks 1,4,6,and 7 work 2,3,5,8, and 9 do not and they are all over 130kb

OK after doing some more research on the differences between Acid 5 and 6 I have noticed the Sony ASIO driver build has changed from 897 in Acid 5 to 1496 in Acid 6. Could this be the problem? If you try and use the old ASIO drive with Acid 6 it will crash so a simple .dll swap will not work.

Of course it has changed. ACID 6 is an new build set. However little technically has changed between 5 and 6.

I just tried with the files you are reproing this with and cannot reproduce with the MAudio hardware or any other audio hardware.

If you switch to the Wave Classic drivers of the FW, does the problem persist?

Uninstalled both Acid 5 and 6 reinstalled for the third time. Same issues works fine in Acid 5 but not in Acid 6. I decided to try it on my Laptop and what do you know it is working ok with both Acid 5 and 6.
Now the question is why on earth will it nor work on my desktop. I have a custom Carillon AC- dedicated Audio machine which works flawlessly with Acid 5 but has one pretty major flaw with Acid 6. I did not try my M-audio FW410 with my laptop yet so we will see if this is what makes the difference....If the preview function stops working with one-shots over 130kb when used with the FW410 it must be something with the new Sony ASIO driver build because it works fine in Acid 5

Since it is working on both Acid 5 and 6 on my laptop..I installed the FW410 to see if this was the issue... No luck in duplicating the problem. I am at a loss as to why it works with Acid 5 but not in 6 on the same machine with all the same settings. Fresh installs and update to 6.0b do not cure this problem. What next? I need to get this function to work...

update...I have been comparing every possible difference in one-shot .wavs between the ones that will preview and the ones that will not and have found the only difference besides file size ( anything over 130kb will not preview) is if you right click and check properties the files that will play all show less than 30 for the Stretch list under Acid info. Now the files that will not preview all have a stretch list of 30+ I hope this last bit of info can shed some light on things! I have done some searching on what the definition of stretch list means but have not found anything nor anyway of changing this setting.

Look under preferences...you can adjust how lomg one-shots are previewed for (options - preferences - other - "seconds for each one-shot to play"). Mine is set to 5.

I tried to play with that setting defualt is 5... I can preview ones-shots less than 130kb in size and with a stretch list value of less than 30.

Any one-shot that is over 130kb shows a stretch list value of 30+ none of this will preview in Acid 6 but all work fine it Acid 5.

Seconds for each one shot to play and all other preference settings Match between Acid 5 and 6. I can get it to work on my Laptop fine.

My desktop which is my main DAW setup works fine in Acid 5 but has this issue within version 6?? It seems to be a bug with this version and my system.

Is there a way to change the stretch list value of a one-shot? How is the strech list value determined?

Hmmm. Wierd. Try re-installing AP6 - I had a faulty installation (right after the 6a update) which caused the preview function to screw up tempo/pitch all over the place, so I re-downloaded the update, uninstalled the previous installation, reinstalled the new, has worked perfectly since then....give it a shot.

have re-installed 5 times even decided to download the trial and use it as a trial to check that....Same problem! Thanks for trying though. Hopefulls someone can explain the what the stretch list is and how the values are defined... I have used Acid since version 2 and have never had any issues until now... there has got to be a fix or reason this is happening.

>>there has got to be a fix or reason this is happening.

We have been unable to reproduce your problem and have not had any other reports from users or beta testers.

We cannot explain why you are having problems.

Believe me, we want to understand what you are seeing, but so far we cannot.

If you don't use ASIO drivers - i.e. use the Mapper or Wave Classic Drivers in ACID's Audio Device preferences - does the problem persist?

Peter

Yes the problem still happens even with other drivers. The same ASIO driver works fine on my laptop. Can I give you more specifics about my system? WIll that help? What is the Stretch List? and how are those values determined? The only thing I have found that makes any sense is that it has to do with the Stretch List value...

The "Stretch list" is internal data which ACID uses to timestretch audio if (and only if) the media is set to behave as an ACID loop. In this case, since the ACID properties are marked "oneshot", this stretch list is not used.

It's more likely that it's the length of the media that is the determining factor for which files will behave and which ones will fail. Longer files will have more entries in their "Stretch lists".

Since none of us have yet been able to reproduce this problem, we're going to need to keep asking questions -- thanks for your patience!

Here are my questions:

1) What are your current settings Under Options -> Preferences -> Other? Do your results vary if you check/unched the "Enable multiple-selection preview in Explorer" option?

2) With the "Enable multiple-selection preview..." option checked, what results do you get if you multiselect all the oneshots in a directory -- do the problem files play or not?

3) What happens if you try to preview a very long file -- for example, a song-length file?

4) I assume that you're currently using the 'Auto-preview' option. What happens if you uncheck auto-preview, and then select one of the problem files and click the "Start Preview" button (or spacebar shortcut)?

5) Do you get the same misbehavior when previewing while the project in the main timeline is playing?

6) If you bring each of the problem oneshots into a project, and then use the explorer to try to preview them, do you get the same results?

Thanks again for your patience -- hopefully with a couple more clues we may find a solution.

Answers to your Questions

1) What are your current settings Under Options -> Preferences -> Other? Do your results vary if you check/unched the "Enable multiple-selection preview in Explorer" option?

Enabled, 1, 5, and 4. I have tried disabled with no change.

2) With the "Enable multiple-selection preview..." option checked, what results do you get if you multiselect all the oneshots in a directory -- do the problem files play or not?

Same issue the ones that have not played still do not play.

3) What happens if you try to preview a very long file -- for example, a song-length file?

I can play preview full songs both MP3 and .wav but they show up as beatmapped not one-shots. (which is how they are suppose to be).

4) I assume that you're currently using the 'Auto-preview' option. What happens if you uncheck auto-preview, and then select one of the problem files and click the "Start Preview" button (or spacebar shortcut)?

Same issue will not play preview.

5) Do you get the same misbehavior when previewing while the project in the main timeline is playing?

Yes

6) If you bring each of the problem oneshots into a project, and then use the explorer to try to preview them, do you get the same results?

No, once I placed them on the timeline the preview function now works.

Now we are getting somewhere! What would cause this?

I really appreciate the help.

Jason

Jason,
Sorry for the delay.

The fact that oneshots are previewing correctly in the case where you've already brought them into the project is interesting, but it still hasn't given enough of a clue to let us reproduce the problem in-house, to find out what's really going on.
Are you previewing these oneshots from a hard drive, or directly from the Loop CD? Do you get the same results from both types of media? If you copy a few of the files to a new folder, and try to preview them from there, do you get the same problems (just thinking perhaps the media files are fragmented...)
I apologize, but I am grasping at straws at this point. After combing through the code, I still haven't found any clues which would explain what you're seeing (and what we're not seeing). I'm going to have one of our Software Quality Assurance experts contact you by email, to see if he can find the missing link that will allow us to repro the problem here.

Thanks,
Frank.

No problems, I am previewing these one shots from the hard drive. I tried to test it directly from the sample CD and the same results occurred. Placed files in a new folder no luck they are not fragmented. I am going to try one more uninstall of everything including the .net framework then reinstall. I will let you know. I appreciate the continued efforts.
