Maybe you're being too specific?

By default, the Media Manager adds wildcards around a search term. For example, if you enter promo, the Media Manager will find just about every instance of any media with that in its title, including "XXXpromo01" or "bass promo".

Make sure you check out the online help in the Media Manager. (It's the question mark in the upper right.)
