Vegas 7 Crash and Burn

decrink wrote on 9/23/2006, 7:53 PM
So, I've been a faithful user of VV3,4,5,6 and now 7. I just upgraded to 7 today, imported a project from 6 and muted two tracks. It crashed. Reset. Loaded a project, muted a track and it crashed. I don't even know if I have the stomach for this. I don't even know where to start as its been a year or more since I've been on the forums. Crap happy.

Care to share the veg? Perhaps we can figure it out together, or, together we can testify the bug to Sony/Madison, and they'll fix it. Sorry to hear about the error.

If you need a place to host the VEG file, you're more than welcome to use my server.

I can put the veg up if that will help. Does it help to put it up without any of the source files? Is it possible it's a plug in? It's all audio files projects that seem to be making it crash. Where shall I post the veg on your site?
Jonathan Neal wrote on 9/24/2006, 1:10 PM
Yea, go for it. We can try it first without the audio files and then with the audio files if a crash can not be generated.

Hmm .. cannot duplicate it here. I am on 7.0a. Opened a project created in 6.0d which has two audio tracks. Muted each and nothing bad happened.

My 0.02 worth.

One thing to always try is a totally clean install, followed by a reboot.

What type of audio files are you using? (file type sample rate, bit rate etc)?
decrink wrote on 9/24/2006, 7:06 PM
Jonathan, I posted the veg to your server. Let me know if there is anything you see there. In response to other's questions, it is one of my smaller music productions with only 25 tracks. All recorded in 24bit 44000 wav files.
Most tracks don't use Sony effects but include:
Vox - Waves TrueVerb m/s (x2 tracks)
Uke - Waves TrueVerb m/s (x2 tracks) and WQ10x2
Kompact synth track - Waves TrueVerb m/s
Banjo - Waves RVerb and Waves SuperTap 2 m/s
Master Waves Q10 Paragraphic EQ x2 and PSP VintageWarmer
Drums - Waves C4 and Waves TrueVerb
Acoustic Guitars - Waves Q10 x2

Everything runs without a hitch in VV6. In fact, I have done MANY tracks with much more running in 6. Just getting the crashes in my first use of 7...don't have too much time to mess with it as I'll just use 6 to finish out this project. Would like to migrate to 7 soon...

I have been playing with 7 for a few days and I notice you use the Waves plug-ins. I do too and Vegas 7 has crashed while using them. Try taking out the Waves plugs and see if the project still crashes.
Jonathan Neal wrote on 9/25/2006, 12:17 AM
I saw your veg file. For anyone else who wants to get it, it's here.

I agree with filmy, ditch those bogus Waves effects. I tried them once and they are tres lame. Many other alternatives out there, my friend. Unless they fix the bulky unreliability of them (I also used them in Mackie Tracktion and Cakewalk Sonar, both with errors). I would install them to test this error on my machine, but eh, why break wasn't isn't yet broken. :)
Spot|DSE wrote on 9/25/2006, 12:51 AM
WAVES plugs? Lame? We're talking about "WAVES," right? From Israel? Far and away from lame. I'd be willing to bet that WAVES tools are used on far more hit (and non-hit) recordings than any other tools in the world.
PACE Piracy tools are somewhat problematic, so I've moved to a USB dongle for my WAVES tools, but they're likely the one audio tool I'd never give up. That and/or iZotope.
I agree that you might want to clear the audio channels of the plugs to see if that clears up the issue though.
Jonathan Neal wrote on 9/25/2006, 1:08 AM
Yeap, Waves are lame, waves as in waves.com. :)

Being used in the most hit recordings does not ever make something necessarily the best, and most anything I've heard in Waves I've also heard in Voxengo, gVST, or the old reliable BBE Sonic Maximizer. L3, Waves, just take a few lessons on EQing and gVST's free SatMax or Max. I can't talk smack or praise on iZotope though, because I've never tried them. I should have said this in my earlier comment, so I apologize for making the claims without backing my why.

If you are having a specific waves problem in Vegas 7, please list the Waves version number here (or even better, send that info + a .veg file to customer service and it'll get looked at by the engineering team).

I love the Waves stuff - so i did not mean anything close to what Jonathan "agreed" with me on - that one "ditch those bogus Waves effects".

As for a specific issue on my end - the error that caused the crash had to do with the Waves5.0.DLL causing an issue with Vegas, but I am not 100% sure. I will try again and make a note of it. No project file, I was just testing things.

Darn it, I had already printed up all my "I agree with Jonathan" shirts. You may have won this round ForumAdmin :)

That's worth a chuckle at best.
Absolutely ridiculous. The most baseless, moronic post ever regarding plugins...much less "waves" specific.

You have no idea what you're doing with any waves plugins, do you?
Jonathan Neal wrote on 9/25/2006, 12:41 PM
When did Waves become more kosher than Vegas?

Since it has caused such a stir, I apologize, seriously - obviously I was very wrong, but it was my opinion. I thought I did a decent job standing up for it, I tried to be especially careful since I disagreed with a great one here, but I never intended to be moronic. Let's try to move on and help decrink out. I'm sorry everyone. We can all laugh it off..

decrink's Veg file can be directly downloaded here.

I don't know the dll version, but he's using Waves Q10-Paragraphic EQ, PSP VintageWarmer, Waves Q8-Paragraphic EQ, Waves C4, and Waves TrueVerb.

P.S. I'm assuming you didn't want a tee-shirt then, jaydeeee.

I was looking at the Vegas - Audio forums and found this thread about Vegas 7 and Waves plugs - waves crash in vv7.

So this does seem to be a repeatable crash of sorts with vegas 7.
vitalforce wrote on 9/27/2006, 6:07 AM
No need to use abusive language like "moronic." ForumAdmin diplomatically overlooked that one.

A "moron" is a medical term defining an unfortunate person either born with, or traumatized into, a brain disorder in which higher intellectual functioning is limited to about the level of a first-grader. It's a very difficult life to live.

Rein in your testosterone, huh? It's just software.
decrink wrote on 9/27/2006, 7:47 AM
The Waves plugins are version 3.5. I bought them a couple of years ago for the studio and they have been sensational. Their sound and automation is top notch so for me its not an aesthetic problem as much as a functional. I tried opening some other veg's that were wav full and haven't been able to reproduce the same crash so it just might be the combos on that one tune. When I get more time and finish the mixes on 6 I'll take a harder took at 7.
Now as for those plugins that put Waves to shame....where can I get 'em and are they comparatively inexpensive compared to the Waves bundles?

Maybe someone could explain to the novice what waves do.

Ok,

It seems that they are complaining about the same issue with WAVES in the AUDIO forum.

According to the Vegas-Audio link I posted Sony has reproed the problem and are working on it with Waves.
pwppch wrote on 9/29/2006, 2:21 PM
I downloaded your project. I am not getting a crash.

Can you be specific in what you have to do to cause the crash - as detailed as possible.

Which two tracks do you mute?
Mute while playing back?

Peter

I'll check this tomorrow. I'm busy in V6 finishing several projects and I don't want to jump to using 7. I'll detail which tracks I mute and how it crashes. It seemed to crash with anything I do.
decrink wrote on 10/2/2006, 8:32 PM
Hey Peter:
I had some time this evening to bring up several projects from 6 into 7 and several played without problems. The ones where I use a number of Waves plugins however seem to crash. I can't tell what the critical number of plugins is, I'd need more time to go through every track. One crashed as soon as I hit play. It brought up the windows "Sony Vegas has encountered a problem and needs to close. We (who are they?) are sorry for the inconvenience."
Others crash if I do anything, I think the mute or solo function wasn't the problem, it was going to crash no matter what I did. So, now I can't really feel confident about using 7 until I get this sorted out. By the way, some of the projects (video included) that I bring up that don't have much going on in them seem to go along just fine...so far.
That's my story and I'm sticking by it.
