OT: Blank DVDs read as a CD

Yesterday my PC started reading blank DVDs (RW and -R) as a CD. With a DVD-R inserted, My Computer shows the drive as a CD. Properties displays it as a CD Drive, RAW file system, capacity 0 bytes. I noticed Microsoft Software Distribution Services downloaded something last week on Sept 14th, but I don't know for sure if that's when the problem began.

I tried system restore from earlier dates but the problem remains. Any suggestions? I really lost on this and I can no longer burn a DVD. Thanks.

I was seeing this problem myself last nite when I was trying to burn a DVD using the V7 / DVDA4 demos??

I didn't pay much attention to it at the time - the disc would successfully burn, reload into the computer and it would switch to saying CD Drive and the disc wouldn't play. Load the disc into the set top player and it wouldn't play there either??

So yeah, I'm experiencing this problem also (now) - don't know if it's do to the trials or not???

I don't have V7, so it must not be that. I googled on the issue and found another person who also just yesterday started having this same problem. I ran all the antivirus and spyware removers and it didn't help. I still wonder if it's something that was in Microsoft's Software Distribution Services 2.0 which was downloaded on my PC last week.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I can't remember Windows ever referring to a blank DVD as a DVD. Anytime I've ever put one in the drive, Windows has called it a CD (and called the drive a CD Drive). If I eject the disc, the drive is "magically" labeled DVD-RW Drive again.
