Here's the reply I got after I emailed sales:

to the good people at SF, how about this:

a) provide a special discount package deal for forge and vegas (around a grand MSRP?)

b) INCORPORATE .EDU PRICING in the price schedule for the first time in your corporate life

thank you.

Hi - Lets live in the past when things were not so complicated. Anyone care to join? Lets go back a few versions when there was less complaining....Just a simple fade and a 3 day render. Now that's living!

I think $899 is outrageous for this product in 1999. I remember when I could get a 4 track cassette for just under $2000. This is really bothering me. I have a friend who just bought a guitar and we want to record and make music. My friend will film us with his Super 8 video cam and maybe we'll make a video if we figure out how to put the sound from Vegas on the video tape.

Maybe you'll feel better when you re-read it to see that it's $699. It's also the MSRP, which is almost always higher than street price.

The product had an MSRP of 699.00 in 1999, and no video capability outside of being able to import a single video track for scoring.
At the time, a street price of around 500.00 was pretty competitive, given that only ProTools was stable and more capable.

Why, when there are so many places already where students can buy software "on the cheap" (and legal, and fully feature)?

I bought my first copy of Vegas from JourneyEd for about $260. It was no different than a copy you could buy from Sony (Sonic Foundry at the time). Even came in the same box. ;) Everytime I've looked, they've offered the current version at the same price. (Though I've upgraded directly through Sony since then.)

I wonder if the originator of this feed, Steven Miers, is still around? He was having trouble with the cash back then. I hope he pulled it together. "Steven, you still editing out there"?

Vegas PRO?

I haven't seen it called Vegas PRO anywhere.

I guess I'll seen in the morning.

Vegas Pro was the name of the original Vegas application. the "pro" was dropped when Vegas Video was released. It later became just plain "Vegas" and Vegas +DVD

Hey Sync.
Check the date on that first post. I was just pulling out some nastalgia for us old timers. Hey Doug, how many years ago did the first version come out from SF?

Now I feel like a dink. Didn't notice the date, answered two of the old posts.
