Subject:ERROR: Could no start SQLAgent$SONY_MEDIAMGR

I get the error

"Could not start SQLAgent$SONY_MEDIAMGRservice on local computer

Error: 1068 The dependency service or group failed to start".

Tech support has not been helpful and this has been going on for over a week now. Tech support is taking over 48 hours to respond to each one of my responses. I would think the turn around time would be faster when I've been having this problem for over a week.

I uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times as requests by tech supoprt to no avail.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I click "ok" and ACID opens and appears to work. But, I'm sure something isn't working.

I tried starting the process manully via control panel --> services and get the same error.

Sounds like the SQL piece is not installed correctly - or some other software came along and corrupted the MDAC install.

When you uninstall and reinstall, are you uninstalling all 3 pieces?
- Sony ACID
- Sony Media Manager
- Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SONY_MEDIAMGR)

I am, but I may try for the third time and keep an eye out for anything wied happening.

What does ACID use the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SONY_MEDIAMGR) for?

The media manager feature uses it.

The MSDE (Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine) portion of the install does create a log file. That might provide some clues. It gets created by default in C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager\msdesetup.log.

Have you twiddled with lots of services or other things in terms of disabling them in an attempt to optimize the PC for audio? That might break the MSDE piece somehow.

We've had a similar problem. SQL is not installed correctly so it cannot be removed. There is also no log created. It doesn't show up in the add/remove programs list. Tech support is ongoing but I'd love to hear any suggestions from other users. Now we're about to make a new user account to try to install ACID into.

Me too. Email support said, "this is complicated use phone support."
I'm not paying for phone support because the software didn't install.

The tech guy at email support will not respond to me now.

Animal when did you buy acid. You have 60 days of free phone support. If you've bought your product and can't get it to run they won't say no to you.

This MS KB article may help in getting you back to a point where you can install it if it won't remove via Add or Remove Programs.

We're still having problems here. We've uninstalled all sony media apps. We've created a new admin user. We've tried installing as a local user. No luck. Phone support is slow going so here's a bump to see if anyone has found a fix. Two idenitcal machines install and run fine!
Thanks!

There should always be an MSDE install log created even when MSDE install fails.

C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager\msdesetup.log.

Once MSDE is fully removed from the PC, be sure to delete the C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager\MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR directory before attempting a new install. The Microsoft MSDE uninstaller occasionally likes to leave behind config files that prevent MSDE from re-installing on the same PC.

There is no log file as you describe. I removed all Sony media and Sonic Foundry products and reinstalled. No log. That whole folder was deleted with the uninstall so I doubt anything was left over. I cleared out the reg entries as well. The specific message I get is:

"The MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR service does not exist or the current account does not have enough privilege to manage it."

Ever any resolution to this? I am getting this on a new install now (7d)

EDIT:

Nevermind - got it. Had to uninstall both the Media Manager and Microsoft SQL (SONY) msde from Add/Remove programs and then reinstall.

Animal,

Go to Add/Remove Programs and make sure ALL instances of MS-SQL are deleted and taking it one step further, I also use PC Tools registry mechanic to remore any conflicitng links in your system. Once you have successfully removed MS-SQL in whatever form it was presented to you in Add/Remove programs, r3eboot and re-install it should go fine.

The problem you are experiencing are conflicting version of MS-SQL and I had a similar situation and the above remidied it very well. Good Luck
