I'm trying to decide which to purchase. I know the Firepod is popular because it works well with Acid, but I've recently heard that the converters aren't all that awesome.

I was wondering if people had good luck with either the MX002r or the MOTU 828mkll.

I was trying to stay away from PCI cards because I've heard that there can be noises from them.

I am looking for a solution that will improve mainly my ability to record vocals. I currently use an Audigy. I'm also thinking I might like the ability to record a whole band, but my main goal is to improve vocal recoding ability. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

hi dirtynbl:

some suggestions:

1. Also check out the Mackie 400F or 800. These are said to have a great preamp front-end and premium converters. (I've heard the drivers could have some issues but that might be all fixed by now).

tip: I usually go to zzounds.com for stuff like this, because they are sooo great at returning stuff if you don't like it.

2. As a case in point, I was interested too in the Motu 828mkII. But after I got it started testing it, it just didn't have the same detail as my current Layla 2496. So I returned it and ended up buying an ART Digtial MPA two channel pre-amp. The sound is excellent with my voc mic, Audio Technica AT4033...at least for my ears!

3. there are lots of things to consider like chosen application-driver-HW compatability. The last thing you want to do is start f***g around with your DAW trying to get stuff to work.

But from the 2 primary uses you listed, "good voc front-end", and maybe some on-site recording of bands, I think i'd robably take a close look at the mackie. (note: I didn't because I needed ADAT connections and it has none).

Good luck in your search.

peace

hmmm i will look into those. Drivers are extremely important, I enojy things that work well. Also, I don't really know anything about even what ADAT is, so I doubt I need it...lol
