Hi. I sometimes use Sound Forge Audio Studio 8 to internally record midi files on my PC. I select "Stereo Mix" in the Windows Recording Control window, and play back a file in Windows Media Player.

However, I've noticed that Sound Forge is a bit unreliable when recording. Sometimes when I open the Record window, the meters are live and flickering green. But other times, they're completely dead, and can't "hear" anything. Why it does this is a mystery to me, as I use exactly the same settings each time. What I do know is, closing and re-opening Sound Forge usually solves the problem. So I believe this is a bug with Sound Forge.

I very much doubt it, as most users don't get your problem, and somebody else of the many thousands of users would be surely have noticed by now.

More likely a bug in your Windows setup, or another application changing your default device/drivers, etc.

In SF make sure you have the actual soundcard selected as the Audio Device in Options. If you have Microsoft Sound Mapper selected, other applications sometimes alter the device.

Hey, I changed the Audio device type from "Microsoft Sound Mapper" to "Windows Classic Wave Driver, and the problem went away. My Default recording device is now on "Yamaha AC-XG WDM Audio" instead of Microsoft Sound Mapper.

I now get reliable recordings, with the meters always flickering green. That's a tip to remember.
