Subject:M-Audio Audiophile 2496 - no sound in speaker

Hi all,

Bought the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card, installed it and downloaded drivers for WinXP. I

Am finding the following:
- line from Tascam (not digital, with mic and keyboard plugged into it) is plugged into the analog INS 1 --- OK
- line to headphones is plugged into analog OUTS --- OK
- line to Boston Acoustics Digital BA735 speakers is plugged into Coaxial S/PDIF Output ---NO SOUND. I tried plugging it into the analog plug and got nothing either.

I don't know if it's the heat and humidity here but I'm unable to figure out what I"m doing wrong. Any help is appreciated.

Melting in the Midwest...
Margaret

I did a quick google on this and found the following in the FAQ section of the Boston Acoustics site:

Q. I’m having problems using the Digital BA735 with non-digital sound cards. Why?

A. The Digital BA735 is a digital only system, and requires a properly set up digital sound card. For assistance in sound card set up, please contact your soundcard or computer manufacturer. If you do not have a digital card, these manufacturers can also recommend a digital card upgrade to based on your computer model and needs.

So forget about plugging those speakers into any of the analog outputs. I would contact Boston Acoustics and see if these speakers are even compatible with this sound card. It might save you a lot of headaches.

Hi,

I called M-Audio and they walked me through it - we changed the patchbay/router to "monitor mixer" , the sample rate to 44,100 and S/PDIF to "Professional" and that did it.

JohnnyRoy - the Audiophile 2496 has both analog and digital in and out- that's why I picked it. I just didn't know how to get the settings right. Thanks!

Glad you got it working. I was going to suggest that you also might have to specifically select the S/PDIF as the output in Windows.

To do this:

1. Go to Start > Control Panel
2. Select Sounds and Audio Devices
3. Select the Audio tab
4. In the Default Device dropdown, make sure the S/PDIF output is selected.

But if it works with what you did with M-Audio that’s all that counts.

I have one - it's not the most intuitive mixer applet in the world. Also watch out for Master Clock source. If you've selected SPDIF at some stage, then after change your active input to, say, analogue HW In, then you only get noise unless you shift the clock back to 'Internal Xtal'.

I would have thought that selecting SPDIF i/p would automatically shift the clock source to that, and selecting anything else as an input would automatically put it back to the card xtal....

Hi again,

I was so excited to get back to recording but no...

Now, I can record new tracks and hear everything on the speakers, but something has gone wrong with the headphones.

If I turn the speakers off so as to record a vocal, I can hear the existing tracks on my headphones, but I can not hear myself in the mic. I can see the input is getting into Acid because the meter moves. It does seem to record, but then when I play it back, I can hear the old tracks but not that new track on the headphones. If I turn the speakers on, I can hear all of it. What gives?

Not sure if this is a function of Acid or the sound card or Windows. Windows does show that the Audiophile is the playback and record device. Acid shows Microsoft Sound Mapper under audio device and the only other option it gives me is Windows classic wave driver.

re. "intal Xtal" - that is set.

What are the headphones plugged into? The Tascam or the PC? If they are plugged into the PC you need to enable Input Monitoring on your vocal track in ACID so that ACID adds it to the mix. You do this after you ARM the track for record.

Did you install the ASIO drivers that came with your Audiophile 2496 card? It sounds like you did not if Microsoft Sound Mapper and Windows Classic Wave Driver are your only Audio Devices. You should also have an ASIO device in there and that’s what you should be using.

1) the headphones are plugged into the Analog OUTS on the Audiophile card. I have Acid 3.0 so I don't have the ARM, but when I hit the record button, I do have the "monitor" checked.

2) When I installed the sound card, I installed what came with it and then got the latest download to work with Win XP. I can see the .dll file for ASIO drivers in the program files directory. Not sure how to tell if they are installed or not.

Also...what's an ASIO device? I went to the Gateway website and got a list of the components in my PC but don't see anything labelled ASIO. The Audiophile manual mentions ASIO, but I only see it mentioned with a Mac.

Thanks,
Margaret

Hi again,

It's working now. I had hooked up both the line-in and the headphones via single RCA jacks, but bought the dual jacks and now it works. Also looked up ASIO and I understand it is a protocal, akin to ANSI standard, not an actual device.

Thanks again,
Margaret

You are correct ASIO is a protocol for talking directly to the hardware with very low latencies. Unfortunately, ACID 3 doesn’t support ASIO. My mistake for making an assumption and not asking what version of ACID you were using. ASIO was added with ACID 4 and we are now up to ACID 6 so I just assumed no one was still using ACID 3. My bad. Glad you got it working.
