Subject:Record new track, has other tracks on it

Hi,

I had posted awhile back that I had upgraded from Windows ME to XP and then I could no longer get my headphones to work on Acid Pro 3.0 (so that I could mute the speakers and record a vocal while hearing the previous tracks on the headphones). Well, I just got the SoundBlaster Live 24bit sound card and reinstalled Acid.

I can now successfully record in Acid and use the headphones, but the new track seems to be getting the new input and all of the other tracks. I tried isolating that new track by copying to a new file to verify.

I'm not sure what you call this - but does anyone know what I"m doing wrong? This is a new problem for me. (I bought the Acid Pro 6.0 but needed to get a project finished quickly so I removed it - would like to get 3.0 working first, then upgrade again.)

Thanks,
Margaret

The problem is with your sound card input choices. You most likely have the "What U Hear" input selected. This records everything that you would hear in your headphones, which is your voice plus everything else playing back plus any beeps, pings, or clicks your computer generates. Double-click the speaker volume control icon, click Options / Properties / Recording / OK. Choose the "Line In" input instead of "What U Hear". Now you'll only record the new material instead of the whole mix.

Just to expand on what Chienworks suggested, if you are recording vocals you want to enable the Mic Input not the Line Input.

Why, oh why, did you just buy a SoundBlaster Live? This is the worst card you could have bought for recording. It doesn’t have ASIO drivers and so the next problem you will have is the latency between the time you sing and the time it actually records. If you can return it, I would. SoundBlaster’s are great for games and watching DVD’s but are useless for any serious recording. The Live version is the worst of the bunch (Audigy 2 is a little better because it does have ASIO drivers, but still problematic and not worth the money)

Get yourself either an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 or an Echo MiaMIDI card. You will get much better recordings.

"Why, oh why, did you just buy a SoundBlaster Live? The Live version is the worst of the bunch (Audigy 2 is a little better because it does have ASIO drivers, but still problematic and not worth the money)"

This was a topic on another forum, in which a person was having several issues, all related to the Soundblaster live, which, of course included the latency problem.
After many post by different people, all advising this person to replace the SB Live, he was about to do so, when one person posted that "The soundblaster Live shoud be fine, and would doubtfully be the source of your problems".
This caused the person with the problems to re-think, and continue to try sorting out his problems, while staying with the SB live.
3 weeks later, after no success, and much grief, he replaced the Soundblaster with an inexpensive E-MU, (1010 I believe) , his problems are now gone, and he's having fun.
As JohnnyRoy said, "SoundBlaster’s are great for games and watching DVD’s but are useless for any serious recording"
Regards,

Stephen

The SoundBlaster Live hardware itself will do a good enough job for many people unless you need to record at a higher rate and bit depth than 48/16 but the Creative drivers will definitely NOT do the job.

I use a SoundBlaster Live Platinum myself (I didn't think I'd use this machine for music then) but I uninstalled the Creative drivers and all other related software and installed the kX Project drivers which are much better and will give you ASIO and full control over your hardware (something the Creative crappy drivers won't do).

Check the official kX Project site below for more info on the driver but don't download the official "stable" 3537 release found there (it is quite old by now):

Instead, download the latest 3538j version found on the official forum here:

Thanks everybody - you guys are great!

I tried turning off the "what you hear" and that did it. I also have had problems with the latency but I didn't know you could do anything about it.

I may just get one of the other sound cards you suggested, as they have two inputs and two outputs. The new Soundblaster Live that I got has only one input port, which also doubles as a digital output, so I have to switch the plug for either the digital speakers or the line-in from the Tascam, which is a real pain. The prior version of the sound card had two inputs - don't know why they would change that.

Thanks,
Margaret
