Hello all
I am thinking of upgrading from my current CRT monitor to a flat screen (I'm getting fed up of that buzzing interference you get when trying to record an electric guitar in front of a CRT monitor).

In order to justify my purchase to her indoors, I'm thinking of investing in one of these LCD TVs which can double up as a PC monitor. My question is, do such LCD TVs avoid this buzzing in the same way as a normal flat screen does? I'm worried that anything that presents itself as a TV could cause some interference.

Most LCD TVs are lower resolution than computer monitors. Unless you get an LCD monitor specifically designed as a computer monitor that also includes TV inputs you'll probably be very disappointed with the picture.

Most of the buzzing interference comes from the magnetic coils in a CRT. These don't exist in LCD monitors so you should be fine. Electromagnetic emisions from LCD screens are so low as to often be considered nonexistant.

I don't know how much you have to spend but a 19" LCD monitor is relatively cheap nowdays. I'm sure you can pick up a bargain if buying from a reputable webshop. I use a 17" monitor with no problems. Inch for inch the LCD screens are actually bigger than CRT's of the same size specification e.g. a 28" CRT screen is equivilant to a 26" LCD screen.

As stated above an LCD TV is not good enough for computer use unless you're using it to play games (even then it can't compare with a monitor.)

The problem with LCD TV's is that the resolution is much lower than a LCD monitor. This means that even though the LCD TV has a bigger screen it won't provide more space to work on. The image will be larger and less clear than a LCD monitor. This is reflected in the large price difference between a 26" LCD monitor and a 26" LCD TV.

It would be great if LCD TV's had super high resolution because then they would provide huge amounts of real estate to display all our plugins and a modular layout of ACID all at the same time. Imagine a 36" LCD screen with super high res! It would be like viewing a wrap around display.

Yes, I'm using two on my Vegas computer. No , you won't get the buzz from the CRT line transformer,, but you may still get all the lower level noise from a computer like always if very close.

I use four 27" LCD TVs as monitors for audio and video editing, and the resolution is set at 1152x864. The Matrox G450s allow all four to go up to 1280x1024 which is more than enough for Avid, Vegas or any audio application. If I used a newer video card I could probably get higher resolution but these that have are just fine, and there is no hz cycle buzz or hum with these CTL/Nexus 2700 LCD TVs either.
If/when you do get LCD TVs, be sure to get the ones that have remocable speakers so they will have only a small gap between the screens.

Thanks everyone - it seems some reckon LCD TVs aren't high enough resolution to be worthwhile, but others are using them with no probs.
Due to budget constraints (see her indoors) I'm probably only going to get one monitor, likely just a 19" or 20" size. Geoff - you say you're using two LCD TVs - how big are your screen sizes?
Do you reckon it would be high enough resolution to use Acid on just one 19/20" screen?

I just got an NEC flat panel monitor 17" computer not TV for $240 (new at BJ's and probably not the lowest price) for two reasons one is the amount of desktop space I reclaimed in my home studio , and the hope that the noise from the crt would be reduced, for me the resolution is not a problem. I use reason rewired in to Acid 5.0 not only does the crt make interference but mine has high pitched whine I will be replacing that one soon.. I think it is well worth it. However if you also use Vegas for video editing or play any of the new games you will want to spend much more and research the specs before you buy. The lcd is less likely to be picked up by guitars pickups I think

2 x 17" @ 1024x768. I undock the various windows, with the main window on the LHS and the various sub-windows arranged on the RHS. I can't imagine working any other way (Acid and Vegas). I never have to shuffle windows around or click of tabs to bring them up.

Perhaps a 17" widescreen monitor would allow an arrangement approaching tthis sort of usability....

I just replaced my old 19" flat panal with a 20" wide screen (Viewsonic vx2025wm) with a res of 1680x1050. Makes it easier to work on projects in view.
