Anyway, I think the problem for me is latency. If I record 5 instruments from KONTAKT, or even just 1, the problem still exists. Upon playback, everything sounds great for the first 5 or 6 beats, then the audio goes under water! I guess it's latency. Any ideas? I've tried setting it to, say, up to 50ms and tried leaving it on automatic... same results.
I'm using a RealTek HD Audio with recent driver 10/2005

Doesn't sound like you are using a device with ASIO drivers.

Yes, that's correct. My sound card uses MME only. However, I do have options to set bufer sizes and also to set a latency time. I've tried both without success.
Do I need to disable the onboard sound card and replace it?

No, I just needed to uninstall the drivers and reinstall with the updated one from HP. Works like a charm now.
