Subject:how do I properly clone acid?

I'm trying to clone my system drive without needing to reinstall any apps.

I tried using ghost and the tool included with my new hard drive, but everytime I clone and use the new drive Acid won't launch....at all...any version.

It say that the app needs to be reinstalled.

That's way too much work.

Is there any way to fix this.

Acid takes like a minute to install...that doens't seem bad to me.

I've used Ghost and had no problems.

Ghost works perfectly here too. I suspect what you're trying to do is a clone a drive from one computer and then put that into another computer. If so, forget it.

no, I'm just changing my old system drive for a much larger new one.

trust me...redoing authorisations, scanning, and setting up all my plugins correctly takes an at least an afternoon for me.

plus I'd need to do it for both acid 5 and 6.

is there anyone with a solution instead of just a comment?

It's hard to give a solution when the 'solution' you've got is the one that works for others. I've Ghosted my DAWs at least a dozen times with many apps and synths including NI authorisations etc coming back 100% perfect every time.

Perhaps it's this other app you refer to that complicating things. Ghost should be all you need.

You need to create a Ghost file on another drive (or ghost to DVD). Then insert a boot disk (you made with Ghost - or your gho DVDs), then load the gho file onto the new drive. At least that's how I do it.

What exactly is the error that ACID gives you? Perhaps we are looking in the wrong direction as to the problem.

Out of curiosity, what is the "tool" that came with your hard drive that you used? Any modern machine should be able to handle an unformatted, raw hard drive out of the box without any fancy formatting tools, workarounds to cylinder limits, or bootloaders that sometimes come with new hard drives.

I forget the exact wording of the error, but it says something like "there's a problem and acid need to be reinstalled"

The easiest way to clone the hard drive I found is to use the diskwizard app that came with the drive (it's a Seagate). Diskwizard automatically clones the drive, renames, and properly changes the letter of the drive so that all I have to do is press two buttons and then swap the drives. With ghost I had to muck around in my bios to get the new drive to boot properly.

Why do you need to replace your system drive? If you have all your samples, music and other data on a separate drive, it's unlikely you will ever run out of space on your system drive. Just add the new drive as another data drive, and either move all your data to the new drive, or start a new data drive.

I know this is a comment, not a solution, but it's what I do.

If you really have to clone your drive, what is wrong with just cloning like you did (which gives you 90% of your "difficult" authorisations), then reinstall the two Acids (which are quick and easy authorisations direct to Sony)? You have already spent a couple of days waiting for another solution - you could be up and running by now, for the sake of 10 minutes installation time.

It sounds to me like you just need help learning how to use Norton Ghost.

I just "ghosted" my system drive for a larger one last week. Everything works fine...well, except for ProTools. Stupid expensive software that never works.

Trust me I know how to RTFM and then some. I'm not a noob to this stuff.

strobe, what version of Ghost are you using?

After doing some reasearch I've discovered that my version of Ghost (version 9) isn't really Ghost.

It's PowerQuest's DriveImage in disguise.

Apparently Symantec purchased PowerQuest and in a very controversial move put out this totally different app as Ghost 9.

The word on the street is that version 9 (and 10) doesn't work the same and is less reliable than Ghost 2003 and previous.

That's probably why they include Ghost 2003 in the box with Ghost 10 and haven't switched the corporate/enterprise version of ghost to DriveImage.

Hi There
I have Ghost ver 9 and have been using it continually since I got it (over a year now, I think). Haven't had any problem with it at all. I believe it's faster than previous editions of Ghost, and it is the upgrade they put out after the PowerQuest acquisition. I've been using Ghost for a number of years and I find this version far more successful at cloning NTSC partitions than previous versions. Don't know what that's worth, but I given the app extensive use without a misshap.
