Firewire,Fast system+HDV ??

Hello,

If you build a fast system AMD 4600X2, fast memory, drives etc..Can you use a Firewire drive for HDV editing?? If so what kind of performance caan be expected?/ Realtime, near realtime??
Or is it necessary to stripe together a couple of SATA drive as a Raid to achieve Realtime??

Thanks,

Answer really depends on if you plan to edit native HDV or CF DIs.

HDV involves no more data throughput than DV but places a lot more stress on the CPU, so for that all the CPU grunt you can manage.

The CF DI creates larger files with less CPU demand, so faster drives helps, I used it with SATA RAID.

The other alternative is to edit DV proxies using Gearshift.

In general though with modern CPUs firewire drives can become a bottleneck, two tracks of video means double the data rate coming off the drive, add another channel if you're rendering out, you get the picture, and don't forget the audio tracks.

Mike:
If you're thinking you want fast external drives (instead of internal), you can do it with SATA. Not too expensive, either. This is discussed in this thread.

And firewire is slower than a single IDE or SATA drive. The only real advantage to using a firewire disk is portability.
