WMV encoding gone.

Hey all,

Somehow I have lost the ability to use WMV. Same is true in Sound Forge. It seems that Sony's WMV encoding plug-in got corrupt, reinstalling Vegas has not fixed this. Upon changing the type to wmv, the description says "No existing templates support this media." under custom, no audio or video options are available. This is completely independant of project settings. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jason

Thanks for the tip, unfortunately it didn't help at all. Doh.

You are not alone. The same thing happened to me about a month ago and I still have not been able to fix it.

When I go to render and choose Windows Media Video V9 (.wmv) save as type, the template selection box is greyed out and it says "No existing templates support this media." in the template description. If I try to render anyway, it says "There is no template available for this format. The selected media may not support it. Try again?". Of course if I try again it does not work. My current project is HDV 720-30p (1280x720, 29.970 fps). I was able to successfully render to .wmv in the past using this project format, but now it does not work anymore (for any project size).

If I try to make a custom template, I have all the audio and video options. I can save my custom template but I am unable to use it. Vegas gives the error message: "The custom template you selected is not valid with the current project settings. It has been filtered out of the template list." Again, the template list is greyed out and cannot be selected.

I also have tried reinstalling Vegas and Windows Media Encoder and have had no success. I am at a loss as to why it used to work and does not any more. I am running Vegas 6.0d.

Has this happened to anybody else?

Yeah, same exact problem. Vegas 6.0d here too. The other interesting thing is that Sound Forge has the same problem, so it seems like they may share a plug-in.

Well, seems that Windows Movie Maker can't export wmv either, so this is a bit more widespread than I thought.

I believe I found a possible solution to the problem. It is not the best solution, but it worked for me. What worked was installing Windows Media Player 11 Beta, found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/alldownloads.aspx

After installing it, all the templates for .wmf reappeared and I was able to render in both Vegas and Windows Movie Maker without any problems. I then rolled back to Windows Media Player 10 using the instructions found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx#RollingbacktoapreviousversionofthePlayer

After rolling back, all the templates remained and I am still able to render to .wmf as normal. I am not sure what caused the problem to begin with, but I too was using Sound Forge (v5.0). It might be related.

Disclaimer: Installing and rolling back the WMP 11 Beta seemed to have no ill effects on my computer and installation. However, your mileage may vary. It is Microsoft beta software after all. :)

Hope this helps.
