Subject:MIDI freezes my computer

MY SETUP:

Win2k, PIII, 833mhz, 512ram. MIDI in through a Soundblaster LIVE! Platinum, audio through a MOTU 828 (Mk I). Sequencing/tracking in Acid Pro 5 and Orion Basic. Lot's of VST softsynths.

MY PROBLEM:

I send a MIDI signal from my keyboard into either program, and my computer cold freezes. I have to reboot. I can tweak MIDI events manually within the sequencer, and I can playback without any difficulty, but the second I hit a note on the keyboard, , it's all over.

MY (ATTEMPTED) SOLUTIONS:

Reinstalled both DAWs. Reinstalled drivers (Soundblaster and MOTU). Reinstalled OS. Still freezes.

This rig has worked (though never very efficiently) without any incident as described above. Any thoughts?

While I'm at it, any suggestions on solid MIDI cards to work in tandem with my 828, Acid and Orion? I've given thoughts towards the Emu 0404, M-Audio 2496, and the MiaMIDI. I need something for driving multiple softsynths with low latency. Something preferably under $200, which may be a pipedream....

Thanks,

Pat
