Hey, check out this documentary video, of the Beatles and George Martin (the 5th Beatle) discussing how the classic "Tomorrow Never Knows", from Revolver, was recorded, using experimental techniques that were never done before or probably since.

John told George Martin that he wanted his vocal to sound like the Dali Lama. Paul brought in to the recording session a "baggie full of tape loops" that they used to manually feed 8-12 tape machines and recorded the loops live into the record desk.
Pretty interesting stuff:

Man, using ACID Pro, we never had it so easy. Just pick, paint & play!

Cheers,

Indeed, some people act like divas when it comes to DAW software. I don't think they realize what it took to record (and do anything related) back then.

You said it. I still have my ½” editing block and razor. (Heck I still have my Tascam 80-8 ½” 8-track w/DBX that goes along with it!) The greatest thing is that the techniques we used back then are still applicable today. In fact, you and I cover some of these techniques in the advanced looping chapter of our Instant ACID book. For example: If you take two of the same loops on two tracks in ACID and adjust the Start Offset of one of them by 50-100 samples you get flanging just like we did back then with two tape recorders and our thumbs.

Everything ole’ school is new again for those who weren’t there the first time. ;-)
