Subject:Why does Acid 6 reconfigure my Windows Log-On

I have quite a few utilities that get run from my start menu in Windows XP Pro. I have deliberately set all of the computers in my studio to boot without forcing me to pick myself from the user dialog screen (I am the only user). After installing Acid 6, I now have to deal with the user dialog screen. This forces me to wait until Windows loads so that I can select myself as the user, before I can leave the computer while my start menu programs execute. Why does Acid reconfigure my log on to Win XP? Also, how can I get my computer to stop doing this and just to boot directly to Windows without forcing me to select myself as the user?

Thanks in advance,
John

Actually ACID didn’t do this, your friends in Redmond did. This is a bug in Microsoft’s .NET Framework installer. It adds a new userid for .Net called ASPNET I believe (I don’t remember, I just deleted it when I saw it). Anyway this is supposed to be hidden but it’s not so you get the logon screen because of it. I thought that later fixpacks of .Net Framework corrected this problem so make sure you have the latest .Net fixpacks. If that doesn’t fix it, just disable the userid from the control panel. It’s only used if you are developing ASP .Net applications. Alternately you can just delete it altogether like I did because any “well known” userid is a security hole just waiting to be exploited. The logon screen will go away after this.

This isn't new; didn't it actually start with AP5? I seem to remember it in the past. Or was it SF?

Hi John:

I sent this as an email. I apparently was able to fix this in May, but I had a HDD crash the other night and had to install a new drive. I got the same user dialog screen problem after i reinatalled ACID, and I can't remember what I did to fix it last time. I looked at your response above and it is now Greek to me. I went to Microsoft's site to try to download the newest version but all I find when I am there is a lot of information for developers. I would like to do as you have indicated you have done to eliminate the extra user, but I can't seem to find out how to do that. Where is the user list located? How do IO modify it?

Thanks in advance,

John

I replied to your email. For anyone else who is interested, use Windows Update to update your .Net Framework 1.1 to the latest level or just go into Start > Control Panel and select User Accounts and disable the ASPNET account.
