Subject:Automation envelopes fighting the controls

So far, the only plugins that I've been able to get to use the automation features properly are the native Sony plugins. All the other plugs I've tried so far just plain don't friggin work. For example, I load up Waves L2, I set up the Threshold control to be automated, but now whenever I try to move the Threshold slider to record (or even just adjust) the control fights me like it's locked into trying to revert to the flat line envelope that's in the track. Shouldn't this work the other way around? So essentially, all automation does for me at this point is just lock up my controls. But again, the Sony plugins automation all seem to work perfectly and as intended.

Also, I've been having this same problem with MIDI tracks, and trying to automate VSTi controls. In fact, I can't even get the automation envelope to appear in the MIDI track at all unless I manually switch the default CC1/CC5 sliders in the control panel to the CC number of the parameter I'm trying to work with.

Man, I feel like I paid a hundred dollars just to beta test this shit, because it's becoming clear to me that no one else apparently has.

Automation of VST Instrument Parameters is done at the Soft-synth bus level.

MIDI tracks allow you to automate CC, Pitch Bend, AfterTouch, and Program:Bank changes(keyframes).

Are your tracks/buses in Automation read/write mode?

Ok, cheers for that, on checking the bus track for softsynths, I can now see the automation envelopes. I still have the same problem that the softsynth controls are fighting me as I try to record the movements. This effect seems to vary depending on what plugin I'm trying to use. For instance, Sony plugins such as the resonant filter plug don't seem to have this problem at all. Recording the automation movements is smooth and uninterupted as it should be. However, if I try to control the cutoff frequency of the filter in Novation V-Synth, it will fight me as I move the virtual knob, but not enough to completely mess it up. In this case it's more of an irritation. In all of my automateable Waves plugins however, the control fights me so hard that it's basically just locked up, and the only way to move that control is to move the envelope itself in the track window, or just disable the automation for that control completely.

I have seen what you describe happen too.

In most of my fooling around the automation recording worked as expected, but there was at least one VST plugin that would "fight" me as you describe. I can't remember what I was demoing - I just chalked it up to a bad plugin implementation, but perhaps there is a host bug somewhere.

Cheers,

Randy

I am seeing some oddities with VST Instrument automation.

Thanks for pointing this out.
