Subject:Kontakt 2 player ?

As in NI site says:

"KONTAKT PLAYER 2 is Native Instruments' new and uniquely powerful Sample Library Player and will soon be available on a number of professional 3rd party sample libraries. KONTAKT PLAYER 2 is the successor to the KOMPAKT Instruments, INTAKT Instruments, and KONTAKT PLAYER 1 on which a large number of current 3rd party sample libraries are based. "

Will 'Kompakt Sony ACID Pro edition' be updated?

Forgive my ignorance (since I'm not knee-deep in MIDI as some of you are), but what exactly does this do? Does it just let you playback instruments? Create instruments?

Kontakt 2 player only plays sampled intruments while kontakt 2 can create those instruments from samples as well as play them.

Mahtazz -

I too am a complete newby at this whole thing. I am having a devil of time trying to figure out how to use Kontakt. I have gone to the website but you might as well have printed the information in a foreign language. Would you tell me if I am close to understanding this interface.

1) I can pull up the interface in ACID but when I go to play the keyboard, the keys press down but there is no sound. I can, however, use the Sony DLS plugin and put music on the timeline using that although I cannot figure out how to use the drum beat interface.

2) If I understand correctly we are, in essence, using the Kontakt program to get the instruments we are using in our Sony DLS program. The only way we will hear anything using the Kontakt program is if we save music we create with Sony DLS in a format that Kontakt can use?

I really appreciate you taking the time to discuss this.

Hi Grasshopper,

I'm very pleased to help you in this thread.

First, note that Kontakt and Kompakt and different Samplers from Native Instruments. Kompakt is included in Acid Pro 6 while Kontakt is a crossgrade option.

>>1) I can pull up the interface in ACID but when I go to play the keyboard, the keys press down but there is no sound.<<

When you select Kompakt or another kind of Sampler you must load the instrument you want to play first, this is because you hear nothing. Go to the Browser/database tab and drag and drop a .nki file a into the black area. Play your keyboard and you will hear it. Sony DLS loads it's own instruments automaticly.

>>2) If I understand correctly we are, in essence, using the Kontakt program to get the instruments we are using in our Sony DLS program. The only way we will hear anything using the Kontakt program is if we save music we create with Sony DLS in a format that Kontakt can use?<<

Kompakt and Sony DLS are two separate instruments. Each of them plays its own set of sounds. Please, browse SonyDLS and you will see a standard GM module while Kontakt is able to play its own set and also sounds in other formats as Soundfonts (SF2).

Please, read the Kompakt manual for a complete explanation of the Sampler possiblities.

Just to build on what mahtazz said, Kontakt (included with ACID 6) is a Sample Player (sometimes called a ROMPler) that only plays back samples. You cannot create you own. Kompakt is a Sampler which allows you to assemble waves to create new instruments from samples that are playable in both Kontakt and Kompakt. So Kontakt reads and writes samples and Kompakt only reads samples.

> Go to the Browser/database tab and drag and drop a .nki file a into the black area.

That’s how it is done in Kontakt. There is no “black area” in Kompakt you must specifically drop them into one of the 8 empty slots for drag and drop to work.

Actually it’s even easier than that. In the upper left there is a Save button with the name New Multi and under that are 8 EMPTY slots. Click on any one of those slots and select the instrument you want to load (just like in the DLS). In the settings to the left, click the MIDI icon that says OMNI and assign it to a MIDI channel (otherwise this instrument you just loaded will respond to all MIDI channels). Then you can play it just like the DLS synth with up to 8 instruments stacked.

As mahtazz said, Kompakt and DLS or two separate instruments that you can use. There are 1000’s of others you can buy and get for free. Just look for VSTi compatible instruments.

Great ones -

Thank you so much for all your help. I must have had some kind of problem because today I downloaded and installed an update extension file and everything is now working. I have spent days trying to figure this out. I am now going to go through the manual as suggested and see what I can learn. Again, I really appreciate your help.

Have a great day.

I'd like to know if this will be updated.

Files that I made with the latest version of Kontakt will not play in the Sony one.
Trying to map sounds in the Sony player is a hassle.
