Subject:Reaper: Acid ripoff ?

Have a look at this new host: http://www.cockos.com/reaper/ To me it looks like an almost 1:1 copy of Acid. I know Acid uses basic Windows GUI elements, but the dev hasn't seemed to go to any effort to even make it look a little different. |

Actually, its a Vegas ripoff, and a very, very good one at that. Sony would be wise to take notice. Cheers, Randy |

"Actually, its a Vegas ripoff, and a very, very good one at that. Sony would be wise to take notice." Exactly! The developer is listening and is quickly implementing things Vegas audio users have been wanting for years. drbam |

Hold on a sec guys the term "Rip off", i take issue with it i am not gonna get into a big cycle/argument where ppl quibble over words ect.. but just say this, there is nothing wrong with a developer listening to audio guys, and implementing features per-request. when ppl post feature requests in the Acid fourm or Vegas Audio fourm, each person WANTS and HOPES that they're heard and that thier feautre is implemented. in fact.. in fact the audio guys making most of the requests in the Reaper forum are from where?? take a guess....thats right, the Acid and Vegas forum. so that is what accounts for the similarities in the software. Not my opinion...Just fact dont be mad at the Truth Ps this will be my only post here so if someone wants last word they are welcome to it. Ziggly |

"Actually, its a Vegas ripoff, and a very, very good one at that. Sony would be wise to take notice." Exactly! The developer is listening and is quickly implementing things Vegas audio users have been wanting for years. Not exactly... Reaper is a collaboration of ideas compiled by Justin, it's just that Vegas has/had the best audio GUI/audio/Windows workflow and it seems many audio Vegans are inputting as well as many other host's fans. It's a compilation of features... using the Windows paradigm can't be termed "rip off" can it? there is nothing wrong with a developer listening to audio guys, and implementing features per-request Now that's "EXACTLY", Justin is simply doing that... taking ideas from many audio/MIDI users and going for it, full bore. It just seems most of the input is from Vegas fans wanting similar functionality. The term "rip off" here is a misnomer, simply an assembly of interests. If Sony should take notice of anything it's that they have/had a winner in many regards but are failing in just as many in audio when it comes to Vegas.. It shouldn't be an issue to Sony though, they went video in Vegas and I can see why... there are many more camcorders than mixers out there. That's the bottom line of course. I said "ripoff" in the subject line because it looks almost exactly the same. There should be some effort to create an independent design, even if only for the developer's own sense of pride. Copying the design 1:1 may not be intentionally deceitful, but it sure is lazy. |

>but it sure is lazy. That's not lazy, thats smart. If something has been done right, there is no sense changing it just for the sake of being different. Vegas does a lot of things right. The developer is innovating in other areas, like the mixer and routing. At the pace he is adding features I would not call him lazy. I said "ripoff" in the subject line because it looks almost exactly the same I don't see that. REAPER has a Windows paradigm interface and structure. If it looks like any Sony app. which ALSO uses the Windows paradigm, it's Vegas. That said... using "Windows" as your GUI and key triggers seems less than a "rip off". REAPER is FAR from a loop app.. At this point it's an Audio/MIDI multi tracker/sequencer. Acid, nor Vegas "any version" is not. MJ |

OK Vegas, but the Windows GUI element part is largely irrelevant. Look at the structure; layout, spacing, even the position, size and order of the icons ! It's absolutely shameless. On one hand at least the developer doesn't disguise where all the ideas are coming from, but on the other to run off a blantant facsimile of someone's else's work leaves a very bad taste. The app itself may be brilliant, but I can't get past the ripoff. |

"The app itself may be brilliant, but I can't get past the ripoff." Then don't get past it. It certainly won't bother anyone who has a vested interest in Vegas becoming all it could be and SHOULD have been a long time ago. It simply makes common sense that if Sony chose not to meet the requests of its audio user base in the manner that it has, someone would eventually pick up the ball and run with it. You call it a rip-off – I call it smart. And there's a fairly significant user base that is grateful that Justin has responded to the vision many of us have had for a very long time. Peace, drbam |

>Look at the structure; layout, spacing, even the position, size and order of the icons ! That's ridiculous. There are some similarities at a high level, but I'm looking at both Vegas and Reaper now - there are substantial layout differences in things like the transport controls, track mixer controls, and others. Vegas doesn't have track level meters, nor does it have the ability to show track faders vertically in the bottom pane. The track mute and solo buttons are in the same location, but this is true for many other DAW software as well. Cheers, Randy |
