Subject:Acid 6 in mission critical use?

Simple way of posting the topic I want to discuss - is Acid 6 stable enough to use in a mission critical application? I haven't purchased the upgrade yet (having WORKING Acid 4 and 5 installs), and after reading some of the posts here, I got to seriously wondering about the sanity of spending the $129 for the update. I also have a working Sonar 5 Producer install, so Acid 6 would be another DAW for me to use. Or should I just save myself the headache and stay with Acid 5, using Sonar to do the serious DAW work? Something that absolutely, positively has to work is my TC Powercore Firewire. It's native VST. Got a ton of other VST's/VSTI's/DXI's I depend on as well which I would like to work - just about everything NI does, ditto for Arturia, etc. My computer does have a number of tweaks that I got from Black Viper's site (alas, it is no longer amongst the living on the net), and Acid 4, 5, Sound Forge 6, 7, and 8 all work okay with the tweaks, despite what the Sony reps say (they like to have a system with absolutely NO tweaks as I understand things). And I run Acid 5 with the Media Manager disabled as well, as I have no use for that part of the program. Thanks for any and all help. I really do want to see Acid 6 work, but from what I've read here, it's a headache I'd rather not deal with. Do hate to miss out on the upgrade low price though. Jack |

I find it to be the most stable Sony release since they bought Sonic Foundry. Other than the VST initialization problems (which I think would have been helped by some documentation in the manual), I find it to be solid - no crashes yet. But, only you can be the judge if it is solid on your machine. You just have to try it out and see. |

Hey jackn2mpu... IMHO NO do not at this point use it for mission critical stuff. NEVER use a initial upgrade of ANY app for anything other than: 1)Awesome upgrade price. $99 is nothing in terms of a "investment" in AP 6. Look in this forum for a link to safe harbor. 2)Becoming aquainted with the app for future work when a a/b/c/d version is out and bugs have been killed. Not to spoon feed you dude I'm saying this for any noobs to software in general. Please wait for at least 6.0a to come out. THEN put acid through "your individual workflow" paces and see if there is anything that was missed. If you've got the time please post a repro so others can confirm deny any bugs as well. I own a UAD card and haven't yet purchased a powercore FW yet for my system so I'm not sure how it handles. BTW...try out the MM now. It's gone through alot of tweaks. Should be good to go now. Ed. |

I would not use any new release for "Mission Critical" work straight off. However, I can verify that Acid 6 is the most stable version yet (I have been on board since 3.0). Remember, the problems people post are the ones you notice - virtually no one posts that they have had a trouble-free installation. Some of the porblems posted related to corrupt downloads, and went away after they were downloaded again. Others related to user-installation issues. The one real problem seems to be with VST plug-ins, which has been a problem since Acid introduced VST support. If you are comfortable tweaking your machines, then you can probably deal with that one. Why not download the trial - if it works Ok, you can buy the upgrade and licence the trial without reinstalling (that's what I did). If you use Acid at all, I would definitely go for the upgrade. Unless you already have Kompakt, the bundled deal is worth the price alone. Just as an after-thought: I think you will see a few extra features in the next update to 6.0 (6.0b?). There are a few unfinished features in the initial release that I can't see Sony leaving to 7.0. My guess is also that 7.0 won't be too far away, and it will be another leap forward. 6.0 looks to me like they are setting the platform for the future. |

I've upgraded to 6. It doesn't like my powercore (compact) one bit. very weird as I used a trial version of 5 and it seemed rock solid with the powercore, so I got version 6(professional). As soon as I fire up a TC plugin within Acid 6, the whole computer just instantly reboots. Tried all the latest drivers, patches etc, still no joy. I am hoping this is something they'll address soon though. BTW I am running it all on a Sony Vaio desktop with XP and an Echo Layla |

Why not download the demo and test it? I assume you back up your mission critical system so you can roll back to before the demo was installed if ACID 6 doesn't suit you. ACID 6 works very well on my rather old AMD system. It occassionally crashes for unidentified reason(s) but I save & back-up songs regularly so this is not too ardurous. My Poco & UAD-1 PCI's work flawlessly with ACID 6. Then again, both Sonar and Live have crashed occassionally so ACID 6 is on a par with them with regard to stability on my system. |
