Monitoring audio while recording multitrack?

Pullmanite wrote on 4/10/2006, 8:33 AM
I am using a MOTU 828mkII to record multiple tracks of audio into Vegas. I am able to assign each track as each one of the inputs on the multitrack recorder. Each track shows levels and waveform as it's recording, but I can't figure out how to listen to the audio as it's being recorded. After recording, I can switch the audio device bank to Microsoft Sound Mapper, but can't hear anything while I'm recording. Any ideas?

Click the 'Input Monitoring' option in the record channel selector.

Then read the manual.

Input monitoring is already set on. I see the waveform and levels change as they should, but I am not hearing the audio through my speakers. I have the audio device set to the MOTU and select which channel to record on that particular track via the record input... but for my output, I only have my soundcard as the option (RealTek onboard motherboard audio) and yet hear nothing.

I have the WDM driver enabled within the MOTU settings.

BTW, I have read the manual but am unable to get the MOTU to do what I want... and yet can't find anyone using Vegas from the MOTU forums. Thought I could find some help here.

Okay... I think I may have figured it out... standby...

You can only use input monitoring with ASIO drivers.

Thank you... I'll turn off the WDM driver and see if the MOTU will revert to the ASIO driver.

I have both active for the MOTU. I just select ASIO in Vegas and that is all that is required.

In "Audio Decive > Audio device type" I selected "MOTU Audio Driver." Do I need to select anything in particular under the playback or audio recording device options?

I still can't get it to work. Are you saying you are able to monitor audio through your sound card and speakers, or back through the MOTU?

Thanks for your help, by the way.

I will assume this is the ASIO driver for the MOTU. Mine is labled ("MOTU Firewire Audio")

You can set your default input port, but that is not required.

You then add a track and on the track turn input monitoring on or to auto.

When you arm the track, the audio input will be routed to the output port that the track is routed to.

Hmmm... those settings are all the same for mine except my driver is labelled "MOTU Audio."

Records just fine... levels move, waveform moves... just can't hear it as it's recording. Must be an issue with my sound card. Weird.
