OT: The ugly truth (Avid)

Due to the realities of the editing world, I am considering studying Avid NLEs even though I have now edited many hours of video and even a full-length DV film on Vegas 5&6.

I downloaded the Avid FreeDV NLE and tutorial just to get familiar (surprised at how simple it turned out to be, although much more cumbersome than Vegas), and it runs on my Dell even though I have Windows XP Home (not Pro) with SP2. I also have net 1.1 installed due to the Vegas requirements.

Any thoughts on why this thing runs on XP Home SP2? Thought it was only supposed to be compatible with XP Pro.

I've dealt with quite a few software companies that specify XP Pro. When pressed though they will usually say, "It may run under XP Home, but we do not support it. You may try it at your own risk." When i've tried demos everything has always worked perfectly well under both Home and Pro. Basically they're making sure that their tech support people won't get tied up answering questions on more than one platform. For that matter, many folks using Pro probably have more stable installations with fewer applications installed. People using Home tend to be, well, home users with a thousand games and other downloaded programs clogging up their systems, not to mention all the viruses that their kids (or themselves) have downloaded too.

Thanks for the thoughts. I have to decide if I have to upgrade (ugh) Home to Pro before buying ExpressDV.

What a hassle, huh? Good ol' Vegas.

get a friend who works for microsoft - come on - we all have em :) - and see if he can hook you up. I've got a family member that works for them, so i can get XP Pro for 40 - 50 bux, they have a family or freinds and family policy or something like that, can't remember. However i've purchased all my copies of XP Pro through my school, they were only 25 for a while when i started, now they're up to like 50 too I think.

Well, if you are certain you're going to get ExpressDV, then go ahead and get it without upgrading to Pro. If it works, you're good to go. The only thing you may be missing is tech support from AVID. If it doesn't work, then you can consider the upgrade to Pro.
