When coping from a tape deck how can each song be placed on its own track, or do they have to be placed on only one track?

Coping? Did you mean, "copying" or recording?

If that's the case, a new track is created every time you press "Stop" in ACID's record dialog.

ACID can't do multitrack recording (or placement)...yet. The forthcoming ACID Pro 6 will have it.
