Subject:Acid 5.0 : midi notes not heard when clicked
Posted by: Djipy

Acid 5.0c build 345.

In the piano roll, I insert some notes and I hear them.

I press play to play some bars.

Then, when I click on a note, it does not produce any sound anymore.
If I add some more notes, they don't play.

The monitor button is on.

If the Acid 5.0 is minimized, then maximized again, notes do play again when clicked.

That happens with VSTi's such as Sfz, Sfz+, MusicLab RealGuitar, Pro53, FM7, etc...
No problem with DLS.

A bug ?

I could reproduce the problem on another computer.

The OPT MIDI Editor by NGK (GenieSys) works perfectly in all situations.
So, obviously, there is something wrong with "acid50pianoroll.dll".

Is it possible to use "sfpianoroll.dll" coming with Acid 4.0 instead ?
But how make Acid 5.0 use it ?

Same problem with Sony List Editor in Acid Pro 5.0

Some more info...

I've got Acid Pro 4 and Acid Pro 5 on the same computer.
In Acid Pro 4, the "Piano roll" and "List editor" of 5.0 are available in the "Midi Editors..." chooser and can be connected.

But....

I don't have the muted notes problem in Acid Pro 4 when using the Acid Pro 5 piano roll editor !!!

I've got a topic in progress at customer support about this problem.

Can somebody reproduce this issue ? Here is the complete description that has been sent to Customer Support.

(1) Download the free sfz soundfont player and install it as VSTi (or use another VST instrument).

(2) Get a Free soundfont. Unzip it and store the sf2 file (or use another soundfont).

(3) Run Acid Pro 5.0c build 345.

(4) In the "Options" menu, "Enable Real-Time MIDI" must be on.

(5) Click on "Insert Soft Synth..." to add the Sfz VSTi and load a soundfont in Sfz (click on the FILE editbox).

(6) Insert a blank new MIDI track.

(7) In the piano roll window, click on the little loudspeaker to enable the monitor option.

(8) As far, you should hear a sound by clicking on the piano roll keyboard.

(9) In the piano roll, paint some notes with the mouse. You should hear the notes, while adding them (because the monitor option has been set on).

(10) At the bottom of the piano roll, click on "Play from Start". The notes should play. Wait until the end of the playback.

(11) Now, click on a note (not on the keyboard) : NO MORE SOUND IS HEARD although the monitor option is still on !!

(12) Keep Acid 5.0 open as is and run another application (explorer, calculator, Word or whatever). Now, come back to Acid and click on a note in the piano roll : the sound is HEARD AGAIN !!

(13) Click "Play from Start" in the piano roll. After that, click on a note - and guess what's happening - NO MORE SOUND again !!

Notes
- The same problem occurs with VSTI's like Sfz, Sfz+, MusicLab RealGuitar, NI Xpress keyboards, KongAudio, and much more.
- However, there is NO problem with a DLS sound.
- SAME PROBLEM with Acid Music 6.0a
- No problem with Acid Pro 4.0f
- No problem with the free OPT MIDI Editor by GenieSys.
- I can reproduce the problem on 2 different computers.
- The same issue with the MIDI List Editor

Conclusion
In the MIDI piano roll and the MIDI list editor, the monitoring option does not work anymore when "Play" has been clicked. However, when Acid gets its focus again within Windows, the monitoring is restored.
According to me, it seems to be a bug. I'm just surprised it has not been reported before.

Additional note
When Acid 4.0 and 5.0 are installed on the same computer, the MIDI editors of Acid 5.0 are available in Acid 4.0 ("MIDI Editors..." button).
However, when using the Editor of Acid 5.0 in Acid 4.0, there is no problem. So, I guess the problem is coming from Acid 5.0 itself, not from the MIDI Editors plug-ins.

That’s 100% reproducible here. ACID has always been this way for me. It never comes back for me after the initial input of notes before playing. I never understood how people used the Piano Roll Editor without hearing the notes. I guess it’s a bug ;-) (I never use the Piano Roll Editor. I just play my parts live)

Thanks, JohnnyRoy.

I'm still waiting for Customer support.

I had sent a sample soundfont (3 MB in size) but they could not load it in Sfz because the sf2 is too big... Strange, mmh ? I've been using sf2 files up to 250 MB on a basic laptop computer...
So, I have sent another smaller file (about 70 KB) and I'm waiting for a reply.

Thank you, mahtazz, but I could not get the file so far (probably server problems).
On the other hand, sfz v1.21 is an old version (the latest is sfz v1.97).

Please, copy'n'paste the address into explorer address bar. It's my own server.
I can e-mail it to you.

I know it isn't the last version, but not many differences.

Thanks.

However, I'm sure that the problem is far beyond sfz, as I've got the same issue with other VSTi's too.

I'm still waiting for customer support, it seems like they've fallen asleep...
