No takers? OK, I'll start it off myself. I've heard Sony will offer full support for Avid and Final Cut Pro. They'll be bundling those apps with V7. Anyone else ...?
ClipMan wrote on 3/12/2006, 4:47 PM
OK, I haven't signed a non-disclosure thing so I can tell you this. V7 is gonna be HOT, baby. It's gonna do it all! How about that? I hope they won't disqualify me as a beta tester in 2007 for spilling my guts ... but who knows?
ClipMan wrote on 3/12/2006, 5:05 PM
Yeah, but I was joking then ... this time I'm serious and it calls for a new thread. Maybe if we're lucky, Sony Admin is looking at the forum right now and is getting ready to reveal all and I certainly don't want to miss it. I'm gonna ask my ma if I can stay up ...

Wow, I just found out that Vegas 7 has been out for three weeks already in China. I'd post the link but I can't read the URL. Everyone there is using it and out of eight billion people, only two have problems and that's because it won't load on Windows For Workgroups ....
Spot|DSE wrote on 3/12/2006, 5:42 PM
And this was supposed to be a "serious" thread?
ClipMan wrote on 3/12/2006, 5:49 PM
" ... a "serious" thread? ..."

Better believe it Douglas ... it don't get more serious than this. I just wish someone (I'm not saying who) would drop a few clues so we could sleep in peace. Those non-disclosure agreements only forbid people to tell bad jokes. That's why I never sign 'em. What we'll do is set up this thread as "Confidential" so nobody looks but us. What say you..?

The high level of OT post in the last few months and the few serious threads on Vegas makes me think that, except for full resolution mpeg4, Vegas has fully matured as an editor. No doubt the Sony marketing guys will float a v7 soon but, for the first time I don't think we need a new version yet. Just give us full mpeg4 and let us save some money for a year or so Mr. Sony.

"Vegas has fully matured as an editor" reminds me of a story (don't know if it's true) that in the late 1800s, the head of the US patent office told Congress to close his office because everything that could be invented had been invented.

From what I gather, I have full MPEG4 support with Vegas V6.0d, for free since my last upgrade:

The MainConcept AVC/AAC codec has been added to Vegas. You can use this plug-in to import H.264 video in your projects and to render H.264 video (including support for HD frame sizes, two-pass encoding, main and baseline profiles, export to all common frame rates— including NTSC, PAL, and 24p— and Apple iPod® video format).

The real question is. If there aren't any rumors, maybe it's because there isn't going to be a V7 for purchase at NAB this year??? Maybe it will just be an announcement or something. Crazy Sony they get you all excited for a new version every year, and then they drop the announce only bomb on ya (aka the A-Bomb) and you're devistated.

Just as a side note - There has been MPEG4 support (in the general sense) in Vegas for some time. Microsoft uses its own non-standard version of MPEG-4 Part 2 for WMV.

A safe bet is that when you say "MPEG4" support you're probably referring to H.264/AVC. Again, most people refer to that as a Quicktime CODEC, but it's actually just another MPEG standard/variant that Apple adopted as it's top-tier video.

Just like Windows puts WMA in the audio stream with video - so does Apple put AAC with their implementation of H.264.

OK, I'll settle for 6e ... that's the patch that gives us seemless HDV editing without any need for an intermediary codec and without having to upgrade our hardware to an eight core processor ...no?
Spot|DSE wrote on 3/12/2006, 7:16 PM
Sigh....you'll likely always need an intermediary codec. Vegas already edits native HDV, albeit slowly. While this aspect may or may not improve, the problem is that editing GOP is not the best practice for a lot of reasons. Moving to an intraframe vs interframe format is much more sensible.

" ... editing GOP is not the best practice for a lot of reasons ..."

Douglas ... I read the White Paper you posted above ... if I understand it, they're going to continue down that interframe GOP path for a while until some competitor comes up with new technology ... meanwhile, a thirty-two core processor is just around the corner ... I can hardly wait.
fldave wrote on 3/12/2006, 7:25 PM
But Spot, when the Cell machines come out with realtime 1080P editing in Vegas 10x, there will be no need for intermediaries :)

Deleted.

I was posting a reply to an earlier post, but is out of context now. Sorry.
FuTz wrote on 3/12/2006, 7:39 PM
Nope, by that time, HD will be over.
Xander wrote on 3/12/2006, 8:36 PM
The push at the moment is HD at 1920X1080 vs Portable at 320X240 resolution. There will always be a new version because there are a whole bunch of resolutions in between. I hope Sony will release the UMD to the general public as the next iPod and the iGame that comes after it, are going to blow the PSP away, along with the new Microsoft 'Origami' PCs.
ClipMan wrote on 3/13/2006, 6:28 PM
Oh, well ... another 24 hours has gone by and still no news about V7 ... maybe Windows Movie Maker will add a second video track and we'll switch to that ... I put in the request last year so we may be due soon ... then we could all go over to Microsoft and edit up a storm ... well, maybe not a storm ... more like a light drizzle ...
jwcarney wrote on 3/13/2006, 8:17 PM
I'm still learning all the features of 6, now I have to start over with 7? Are you sh#tin' me?

Really, when I see most posts, I don't think most have even begun to plum the depths that Vegas 6 contains.

I'm pretty sure support for XDCAM HD will be added, whether its 6.x or something else I don't know. But Sony will not allow itself to be embarrased by having Avid or FCP or someone else support it and not themselves.
at least I hope so.

I've heard a rumor that the new big, bad application will be called "System 1" and integrate Vegas, Acid and other Sony Apps.

But just a rumor.

Cheers!
Spot|DSE wrote on 3/13/2006, 8:38 PM
LOL, that is an OLD rumor, except it was called "Manifesto." Jack S, are you out there? :-)
Jay_Mitchell wrote on 3/13/2006, 11:09 PM
Vegas 7 will not be released at NAB, this year. Don't count on it, before fall.
