Laptop Firewire laptop small

On My desktop I use a firewire connection to capture video. The big end of the firewire cord connects to my camera small end.

On my laptop I bought with firewire connection and noticed it only has an out, SMALL END. So my question is as follows:

Can a firewire cord small end to small end work?

Absolutely. I had my SONY VX2000 hooked up just that way so I could record using DV Rack to an external HDD.

The size of the connector has nothing to do with being an in or an out. The larger connector carries power while the smaller one does not. It makes sense that your laptop would not supply firewire w/power. All it means is any device which requires power via firewire (like the M-Audio FW410 or an external hard drive) would have to be plugged into AC power to work with your laptop. Since video cameras run on their own batteries, this shouldn’t be a problem.
