V5 - disappearing clips

Twice within 2 weeks I've had a video file (the avi clips) disappear f- both times for the same video.

The clips were all there last week and the finished video just waiting for one more piece of video that I needed to go out and shoot. Today when I went to add the final piece all the video clips were white on the timeline and said they were offline.

The only ones remaining were my text and some stills I had inserted. Does anyone know how this might have happened so that I can prevent this ever happening again.? My client was expecting the video today, but now there is no way, since I have to recapture and re-edit it from scratch - for the second time!

I definitely did not delete 98 clips by accident or move them to another drive and "misplace" them since I knew I would be working on the file today. I did a search, I looked through all my files, to no avail. thanks for any replies.

No - I just clicked on "save" as usual. I've never used copy and trim.

Possible the files were corrupted? Like the way certain miscoded MPEG files will crash Windows Explorer?

If you use external drives, Windows has the annoying habit of changing the drive letters. You may have to manually navigate to the "new" drive letter when you re-open the projects.

No, I never did find the files. Just recaptured the entire tape and spent a few hours re-editing it. I had the original version on the Web, so that helped in getting the same clips in the same order, with the same effects, minus all the changes the client wanted.

Found out the client is out of town until Monday, so that helps. I got off easy considering the circumstances.

John, I don't use external drives, but probably will at some point. Will keep in mind what you suggest. The only thing different I did was to uninstall, re-install, and then un-install Norton Antivirus and replace with AVG because Norton was giving me a hard time, but i don't see how that would have affected these particular files.

I printed the video to tape as soon as it was finished in case the files disappear again. If I would have done that before it would have saved me a lot of work. Live and learn, as they say.

thanks for everyone's input.
