Subject:Midi Patch reverts to Patch 1 when I hit play

Self-explanatory in the title.
I am finding that every time I hit PLAY my MIDI patch reverts to the first patch. this happens with WASP VSTi or with the Pro 53 Xpress, so far.
I have just reinstalled ACID. I have some other MIDI tracks in this project, but they are all muted.

Could one of them be sending a MIDI patch change even when muted?

Yes, muted MIDI tracks send the non-notes data (Acid Pro 4).
I'm sure about the expression values (CC 11), I guess it's the same for other controls too, patches and pitch bend.
So, muting a track is not enough : events must be removed or moved past the end of the song...
