I have acid pro 5 and a bunch of loops and samples, do i need anything like a drum machine, keyboard etc?

I plan on getting acid pro 6 when it comes out. I thought about using the Alesis SR-16 16 drum machine along side it. Not trying to spend a whole lot on a drum machine. what do you guys think? thanks

I personally think a hardware drum machine is a waste of money AND asking for more trouble than it’s worth. Since the drum machine is external you will have to find a way of recording it’s output into ACID. That may require you to spend more money on a better sound card since you will want a clean recording and most motherboard sound chips are very noise for recording. (they are optimized for playback)

What would be a much better use of your money is to get a VSTi Drum Machine if you really want to program your own drums. That will be fully integrated into ACID’s workflow and recorded with the rest of you project. But before you do, get some drum loops and see if they do what you want a lot quicker. Many drum loop libraries come with One-Shots so you can build your own kits. If you get a library in the genre you will be composing in, many of the loops will probably be just what you want or close enough to use as a base and then add One-Shots to augment the beat. ACID is a pretty capable drum machine all by itself.

In addition to what JR said, if you're looking for a hands-on approach, M-Audio makes a control surface (Trigger Finger) for the express purpose of drum programming (or MIDI programming in general).
