Subject:Sony NAMM Announcement Email...

Alright, I've been on Sony (and Sonic Foundry's) email mailing list for years, and I don't remember ever getting an email specifically inviting me to the NAMM show. So when I got home and checked my email and saw one with the title "Sony NAMM 2006: New Tools And Technology" I thought I was getting a night-before preview of tomorrow's unveilings (no such luck). But the first sentence said: "Visit the Sony Media Software booth at the NAMM Show January 19-22 to experience revolutionary new software and media, guaranteed to change the way you create and produce music." There's no way they are going to make a statement like that without something huge. I'm almost inclined to think it's not going to be Acid Pro 6.0, but rather a whole new software title that owners of Acid / Vegas / Sound Forge can upgrade to. Keep in mind I have NO inside info here--I'm just guessing. But the symbols at the bottom of the email indicate looping + multi-track recording (the picture is of several microphones) + MIDI = ? I just may switch on the computer early tomorrow before work just to see what all the fuss is about. I can't wait!! |

Nahh, “guaranteed to change the way you create and produce music” is just Sony marketing speak for enhanced audio scrubbing. :-) |

LOL @ Weevil :) I'm not gonna get my hopes up too much... they've been dashed way too many times in the past by Sony. Weevil reckons a new scrubber. I reckon it's the Vista edition of Super Duper Music Looper. With 3D, er, stuff. |

I’m actually betting that Sony have thrown the kitchen sink at ACID this time round. I really do have the feeling that tomorrows update is going to be huge. |

Hmmm, but Sony have known about our greivances for soooo many releases now of both Vegas and ACID, I kind of find it hard to believe that they've suddenly changed their tune. Otherwise surely they would have incrementally added the kitchen sink? :P Ok, it's been 18 months, but still I'm not sure that's enough time for them to completely turn ACID around. I will however very happily eat my words if it turns out they have done something huge! I used to be wowed by the SoFo stuff all the time... certainly be nice to be in that place again. Has anyone else seen this mysterious email? Message last edited on1/18/2006 6:33:17 PM byBen . |

I have my reasons for my theory... I thought the last ACID update was easily the best and I think Sony only came on the scene halfway through its development. I reckon Sony then decided that Vegas should focus on video and ACID should be their key multitrack audio app. My understanding is that most of the Video guys were absolutely thrilled with Vegas 6. ACID has had a huge amount of development time, it is (we presume) getting launched at the biggest showcase event of the year, and there were the rumours a while ago of a Sony person saying it was going to be “huge”. I reckon all that points to something significant. Boy am I going to look like a total clown if I get this wrong! |

I had an email entitled "Visit Sony Media Software at Winter NAMM" last year - but not this year, so they *have* sent them before but it all seems a bit random! The line did sound like a straight-forward marketing headline to me - lots of products have promised to change my working life.. but I am still very hopeful that this will be the big step forward in ACID that we are all waiting for. Something that creates the "missing link" for those of us still having to use Cubase/Sonar/Logic to sequence music would be fantastic. Maybe ACID stays as the name for the loop-based technology, but we get a new sequencing product with a new name? I do hope so! (Just in case I am wrong and very disappointed, it's worth me remembering that Vegas "changed the way I produce music" when version 5 came out - I suddenly had to use a pan plug-in for effects to receive the channel's stereo position.. a complete change from version 4 - not all change is good!) |

Even if they announce something who know when it'll be ready to buy? I've got a feeling the wait may not be over. :( |

Or maybe they won't change the name!! ;o) Looks good - let's hope it's well-tested, bug free and as nice to use for audio editing as Vegas! No wonder Peter wanted us to pay a visit!! |
