Network Solutions has some hosting packages. I haven't had any problems with them.

IPSHosting is pretty good and they have BBS software for forums. Last I checked it was a little more than NS.

www.globat.com

Cheap - Great customer service, and I have a terabyte of bandwith annually

10 GB/day

If you say that www.day-vidsproductions.com sent you and I get 2 others to, I get a free year of service at that :)

Feel free to

My wife just upgraded our site to the Globat Terabyte package 4.5 Terabyte/year with shopping cart, etc. Been with them for about 2 years, few problems, none significant.

I won't steal FrigidNDEditing's referral. Use his/hers

It may be more than 1 TB - but they have a deal right now for 4.95/mo with a free domain, and 3.5 TB, and .... and.... and....

I'm using Site5 and have been happy.

I can't recall when but we had a pretty good thread on this several months back.

Good luck...

1&1 has lots of plans, for example 1 TB monthly data transfer for $9.99 per month, or 250GB for $2.99 per month.

They are large (#1 in the U.S. I think), have good support and are well rated for reliability.

I use ihost networks. Not had any problems with them. I needed some extensions uploaded, sent the appropriate information and they had the server ready within a day. The only reason I signed up with them is b/c I used sitespinner to build a site and they were offering a free domain name and service for 9 bucks a month.

Satisfaction is more common these days. I use prohosting.com and have liked them for years.

Do any of these high bandwidth providers offer MySQL, PHP and CGI capabilities?

1&1 as well. Pretty much the best deal around. And at least people have heard of the company, unlike some others mentioned.

1&1 has all of those, included in all Unix [non-MS] host plans, even at $2.99/month.

My biggest piece of advice to you, is do not choose a host solely on their low price. I've learned the hard way too many times. Believe me, you'll pay for it in server downtime and undue stress.

I've recently moved back to Dreamhost. For a long time, I've been hearing user reports of how much they like the service, so after a very bad hosting experience with another company (which I won't mention here, because even bad publicity is still publicity), I've moved back to Dreamhost.

I must say, I am quite impressed with the service thus far (especially the fact that I can host multiple domains with very little restriction, a feature that I need and that the other hosts mentioned do not wholly support).

I'm currently on their lowest plan (Crazy Domain Insane), which is $7.95/month if you prepay (rather than month to month). 20GB Storage, 1TB Bandwidth, unlimited domain hosting, etc. It's quite nice.

Check them out here.
Note: Yes, it's a referral link (just remove the referral part if you don't want to give a referral, I got no bones about it).

I believe globat has MySQL, PHP and CGI.

I have a client who is an actress looking to set up a website to host her resume, photos, and some video clips. She recently asked me about website hosts.

Which one would be the best for her? Any of the ones mentioned here? I am thinking mostly in terms of the videos being quick and easy for directors, agents, etc to view without problems.

Wow Jive Dreamhost has a lot of bang for the buck!

I am currently using uplinkearth www.uplinkearth.com

They are unique in that they offer Windows hosting ASP.net, ASP with Access or MS SQL plus they offer Cold Fusion MX and Php MySql. If you don't need the asp or .net or coldfusion then the php MySql at dreamhost looks very tempting --especially the quicktime streaming.

I have mulitple sites and need to be able to host multiple domain names (I build them for others)

If you are looking to just have one domain for your own site then you really have a lot of choices.

One other important thing to consider is your ability to talk with a live tech person--24/7. Not all of them offer that!

Are any of these hosts running a Windows Media Server?

Site5 and Hostgator. Check out, I think, webhostingtalk.com or something close to that. It's a hosting discussion forum.

I’ve been using Lunarpages.com and have been very happy with them. They have a lot of great tools to watch the traffic at your site and they have been very reliable.

Great info guys!
Can anyone recommend equally good ones for us who are in Canada?
Thanks,
Tom

Wow Jive Dreamhost has a lot of bang for the buck!

Seriously! I just remembered a few more things about it. Every week, your storage space and bandwidth are increased (kinda like Gmail). On the plan I'm on (the lowest plan), I get 160MB more every week (eh), but I also get 8GB more bandwidth every week (nice!).

I also got this promo code that'll save anyone $25 on any plan: FREE25
Type the code in the promo code box during signup and they'll take $25 off your bill! That made it less than $6.00/month to host with them on the lowest plan (20GB/1TB)!

I don't want to sound like I'm pimping them too much (sorry if I am), but like I said, I had a bad experience with my last host, and I'm happy to be back with Dreamhost. It's kinda like how I had to work on FCP for a job a couple months ago. I was so glad to be back on Vegas when that job ended! :)

Great info guys!

I don't know of any hosts specifically based in Canada, but the truth is, as an internet-based service, do they really have to be in Canada? Most reputable and established hosts will accept international payments, so I would look for the most reputable host for your needs and budget, rather than physical location.

Are any of these hosts running a Windows Media Server?

They don't specifically say they run a Windows Media Server, but Dreamhost does say they can stream WMV, WMA, MP3, PLS, Quicktime, and Real Media files.

I'm using Dreamhost also. Great customer support....and yes they have a program where they increase your diskspace and bandwith every week. Pay a year in advance and save more. Don't want to sound like a salesman for them, but I'm very happy with the last year of service from them.
GlennChan wrote on 1/10/2006, 2:45 PM
I have web hosting with Dreamhost because they had the promotion code 777. Web hosting for about $9USD, plus domain registration (new customers only!). The best promo code right now may be "BEST" ($22 for first year for new customers). Search around for their best promotion codes.

Afterwards dreamhost does cost more.

Their customer support and uptime weren't stellar for me.
Customer support is 24hr response only for "level 1" tech support, and it took them like 4 weeks to solve my domain transfer problem. It was annoying, but didn't really hurt my website.
The uptime is not perfect. You can monitor your site free with siteuptime.com. They were down a day because their data center lost power and its backup generators failed (theoretically highly unlikely).
Uploading to their site can be a little slow.

Otherwise, they are a goode choice for mildly-important websites. They are good if you put videos on the website. Their overage charge is $1/GB, and you can enable throttling on your website. They advertise way more bandwidth than 99.9% of its users use. This is called overselling and is a common practice in the web hosting industry. If their users used 10% of what they advertise, Dreamhost would not make money.

2- If you aren't putting video on your site, I recommend icdhost.com

Tech support (email) responds within minutes.
They are pretty well-featured, and their uptime is very good for a budget host. They oversell much less than other companies, which is a good thing. Their servers aren't going to have lots of people who use up all of its resources (which means slow performance for your website). $60/year.

webhostingtalk.com is an excellent forum with user reports.

3- Whatever web host you go with, I recommend you get your domain registration with another company. If the web hosting company provides domain registration, transfer it to namecheap.com

This makes it a lot easier to switch between web hosts, in case you don't have a good experience with them. The reason the web hosting companies give you discounted domain registration is because it makes you more likely to stay with them (i.e. it's hard to transfer away).

I would go with namecheap.com over godaddy.com ($1 cheaper) because namecheap doesn't gouge you on extras, they are more fully featured if you need to do advanced things, and they have a much better reputation (i.e. better support, more security against people trying to steal your domain name).
